Aston Martin ONE-77 Challenge-11 (Project)

TITLE OF THE PROJECT- Surface Modelling of Aston Martin one-77.

OBJECTIVE –

  1. To Learn and Design an Aston Martin one 77 in Solidworks.
  2. To Learn About Surface Modelling Methods.

INTRODUCTION-

SOLIDWORKS, a solid modeling computer-aided design, and computer-aided engineering program is one of the most popular software options for Mechanical engineers. SOLIDWORKS was developed by MIT graduate Jon Hirschtick and was bought by Dassault Systems in 1997. The software now encompasses a number of programs that can be used for both 2D and 3D design.

At the initial stage, the software is used for planning, visual ideation, modeling, feasibility assessment, prototyping, and project management. The software is then used for the design and building of mechanical, electrical, and software elements. Finally, the software can be used for management, including device management, analytics, data automation, and cloud services

WHY SURFACE MODELING?

Surface Modeling is the method of showing or presenting solid objects. The process requires you to convert between different 3D modeling types, such as converting the 3D object to show procedural surfaces, validate imperfections, and apply smoothness. While more complex than Wireframe Modeling, Surface Modeling is easier to achieve than Solid Modeling.

In a CAD environment, it is possible to fully produce a model using only surface modeling - but most real-world applications require a combination with solid modeling technique as well. How a designer is able to interact and manipulate an object in a CAD system is the difference between solid and surface modeling.

DESIGN METHODOLOGY-

DESCRIPTION-

1.The setting of Blueprints -

Import the Graphics Body document into your original part or assembly document, so that we can use it as a blueprint to help you modify the geometry of the original component.

2.Units-

Creating a new part in Solidworks the default unit system is set to the millimeter, gram, second for this project it needs to change it to the centimeter, gram, second

Most commonly commands use to design Aston Martin one 77-

1. Sketch the profile - Sketches are collections of 2D geometry that are used to create solid features. These include lines, circles, and rectangles. Geometric relationships such as horizontal and vertical are applied to the sketch geometry. Dimension size the geometry while the relations restrict the movement of the entities.

  1. Projected curve -Projected curve is a very useful and precise tool that is going to use a lot throughout this project
  2. Boundary Surface- The boundary surface feature lets you create surfaces that can be tangent or curvature continuous in both directions (all sides of the surface). In most cases, this delivers a higher quality result than the loft tool. Consumer product designers and others who require high-quality surfaces with curvature continuity can use this tool.
  3. Filled surface- You can use this feature to construct a surface to fill a gap in a model. You can use this tool in this case

1.Correct a part that does not import correctly into SOLIDWORKS.

2. Fill the holes in a part used for core and cavity molding.

3. Construct a surface for industrial design applications.

4. Create a solid. Include features as separate entities, or merge those features.

  1. Extrude Surface - You can create extruded surfaces from models that include 2D or 3D faces and knit the extruded surfaces to surrounding features.
  1. Extrude Cut - Removes all material from the outside of the profile. By default, the material is removed from the inside of the profile.
  1. Revolve – Revolves add or remove material by revolving one or more profiles around a centerline. You can create revolved boss/bases, revolved cuts, or revolved surfaces. The revolving feature can be a solid, a thin feature, or a surface.
  1. Offset Surface- The offset surface feature creates a surface from the existing surface. You can create an offset surface with a distance of zero.
  1. Ruled Surface- The Ruled Surface command creates surfaces that extend out in a specified direction from selected edges.

Replace non-drafted surfaces on imported models with drafted surfaces (using the Tapered or Sweep type)

Create parting and interlock surfaces.

  1. Extend Surface-To extend a surface by selecting an edge, multiple edges, or a face.
  1. Knit Surface- The Knit Surface tool to combine two or more faces and surfaces into one.

Some information about knit surfaces:

  1. Edges of the surfaces must be adjacent and not overlapping.
  2. Surfaces do not need to be on the same plane.
  3. Select the entire surface body, or select one or more adjacent surface bodies.
  4. Knit surfaces absorb the surface bodies you used to create them.
  5. Create a solid body when the knit surfaces form a closed volume or leave as a surface body.
  6. Select Merge entities to merge faces with the same underlying geometry.
  7. Select Gap Control to view the gaps or modify knitting tolerance.
  1. Fillet- A fillet is a tool that enables you to smooth the edge between two adjacent faces in a surface body that meets at an angle.

There are four types of fillet i.e. constant type fillet, variable size fillet, face fillet, and full round fillet.

  1. Delete Face- With Delete Face tool, you can do the following:

1. Delete a face from a surface body, or delete one or more faces from a solid body to create surfaces.

2. Delete a face from a surface body or solid body and automatically patch and trim the body.

3. Delete face and generate a single face to close any gap.

  1. Trim surface - A surface, plane, or sketch as a trim tool to trim intersecting surfaces. Also use a surface in conjunction with additional surfaces, as mutual trim tools.
    • Trims surfaces using surfaces, sketch entities, curves, planes, and so on.
    • Trims multiples surfaces using the surfaces themselves.
  1. 3D Sketching tools-

Some of the tools you can use to create 3D sketches include:

All circle tools, All rectangle tools, Lines, Points, Splines.

  1. Patterns –1.Curve Driven Pattern –The Curve Driven Pattern tool allows you to create patterns along a planar or 3D curve. To define the pattern, use any sketch segment, or the edge of a face (solid or surface), that lies along the plane. Base your pattern on an open curve, or on a closed curve, such as a circle.

2.Linear patterns -

Use linear patterns to create multiple instances of one or more features that space uniformly along one or two linear paths

3.Circular patterns-

Use circular patterns to create multiple instances of one or more features that space uniformly around an axis.

  1. Mirror-

Use Mirror to create a copy of one or more features, mirrored about a face or a plane. In parts, mirror faces, features, and bodies. In assemblies, mirror assembly features. If you modify the original feature (seed feature), the mirrored copy is updated to reflect the changes.

  1. Surface loft- Loft creates a feature by making transitions between profiles. Aloft can be a base, boss, cut, or surface. You create a loft using two or more profiles. Only the first, last, or first and last profiles can be points. All sketch entities, including guide curves and profiles, can be contained in a single 3D sketch.
  2. Combine- In a multibody part, you can combine multiple solid bodies to create a single-bodied part or another multibody part.

You can add or subtract bodies, or keep material that is common to the selected bodies.

  1. Drafts- Draft tapers faces using a specified angle to selected faces in the model. One application is to make a molded part easier to remove from the mold. You can insert a draft in an existing part or draft while extruding a feature. You can apply a draft to solid or surface models.
  2. Sweep- Sweep creates a base, boss, cut, or surface by moving a profile (section) along a path. A sweep can be simple or complex. To generate the swept geometry, the software creates a series of intermediate sections made by replicating a profile at various positions along the path. The intermediate sections are then blended together. Additional parameters can be included in the sweep feature such as guide curves, profile orientation options, and twist to create a wide variety of shapes.
  3. Assembly-

1. Add components-

When you place a component (either an individual part or a subassembly) in an assembly, the component file is linked to the assembly file. The component appears in the assembly; the component data remains in the source component file. Any changes you make to the component file update the assembly.

2. Edit Assembly components-

From an assembly, you can open a component in a separate window to make changes. When you switch back to the assembly window, you rebuild the assembly to incorporate the changes.

23. Mate- Mates create geometric relationships between assembly components. As you add mates, you define the allowable directions of linear or rotational motion of the components. You can move a component within its degrees of freedom, visualizing the assembly's behavior.
