IC-Engine Calibration Using GT-Power and GT-Suite

Assingment:5 (Case study on CI engine)

Aim: To perform a thermodynamic analysis of an engine for tractor application for use in India.

Objective:

To perform a thermodynamic analysis of an engine which can be used for tractor applications and also obtained output should have minimum BSFC target of 210 g/kW-h and a maximum BSFC target of 225 g/kW-h.

Description:

Case Setup for the Model:

Bore=100mm

Stroke=110mm

Compression Ratio= 16.5

Number of Cylinders= 4

Cubic Capacity=4.0 liters

Rated RPM=2200

  • The cylinder geometry is specified as per the considered engine standards. i.e. Bore=100mm, Stroke=110mm, Compression Ratio= 16.5, etc.

  • The firing order for the cylinders is calculated by 720/4 i.e 180 deg. So for the first cylinder it starts with zero and rest 3 cylinders have 180 deg each.

  • The Initial conditions for fluids are specified as per the engine specification.

  • Fuel Injector parameters for the Diesel Engine is provided. Based on our case we can vary the Injected mass value.

  • Not all values are specified in the model at respective locations, so here in case setup we sellect all the important parameters and hence the values are alloted accordingly. In our case of simulation we are running for two different rpm i.e. 2200 and 1300 respectively.
  • As mentioned, rated A/F ratiois considered as 25 and intermediate A/F ratio as 22.
  • Also specified speed i.e. rated speed as 2200 rpm and intermediate speed as 1300 rpm is considered.

Results:

  • As per the engine the Power should be close to 75HP, from the above result the Power obtained is 77.5HP. As the obtained value is very much close to the required value, we can consider this power.
  • The obtained values for BSFC are 211.2 g/kW-h (min) and 219.3 g/kW-h (max). Hence these BSFC values are satisfied with the actual targets - min 210 g/kh and max 225 g/kWh.

To find the deviation from the rated value for Break Power;

Simulation Results Target Values
Break Power=57.8kW @2200rpm Break Power=55kW @2200rpm

Deviation = (Simulation results - Target value)/Simulation results*100

= (57.8 - 55)/57.8*100

= 4.8%

Therefore, at 2200rpm it has 57.8 kW of brake power. So there is a deviation of 4.8% when compared to the target value.

Conclusion:

  • Engine model for tractor application is created and thermodynamic analysis of an engine is performed.
  • The resultant power output is close to that of the target power value.
  • The bsfc targets- min 210 g/kh and max 225 g/kWhis also maintained within the limits.
