Assignment 6
Turbocharger Modelling in GT suite
Turbocharger is an mechanical device which boosts extra power and ultimately results in the imporvement in the efficiency of the engine.
Types of Turbochargers used are as follows:
1.Fixed Turbocharger.
2.Waste gate Turbocharger.
3.Variable Geometry Turbine.
Location of these types of Turbochargers are given in GT suite as shown below:
1.Fixed Type Turbocharger:
2.Wastegate TC
3.Variable Geometry Turbine (VGT)
Tutorial No 6:
In this tutorial, Inlet condition to the manifold is modified as like compressor input to the manifold without using compressor template. and similar to the exhaust also instead of using turbine at the end of model ambient condition is modified accordingly and Results are shown below:
Performance predictions:
Model with and without Turbocharger has been studied and it has been found that by using turbocharger Brake power and torque increases. Hence decreases the energy from exhaust gas.
Tutorial 7:
In this tutorial Compressor and turbine is modelled by mapping the the files from compressor and turbine as *.cmp and *.trb files and results are shown below:
Compressor and turbine must be opearted at operating point to have maximum possible output and hence increases the efficiency.
Variable Geomtery Turbine (VGT):
VGT requires varying rack positions and also different maps for respective position
VGT has controller has the boost target pressure,Different boost pressure targets for different engine speeds and different amounts of fuel can be injected.
Factor affecting the efficiency of the turbochargers:
- Turbolag:
Turbolag is the most important factor which ensures the turbocharger efficiency where turbolag refers to delaytime at which turbocharger gets activated once the engine is activated.
Thus trubolag can be controlled by the amount of exhaust gas passing through the turbine at particular engine speed. In modern engines this factor is controlled by controllers which senses the engine speed and exhaust kinetic energy and pressure in the ambient and hence adjust the amount of exhaust gases to get the appropriate power.
- Geometry:
Blade geomerty and vanes allows the ehaust gas to enter and make it rotate.
Conclusion:
- Model is studied and and the objectives are completed specified in the problem.
