Assignment 5-RADIOSS Interfaces & Study of Effect of Notches Challenge

Objective:

To analyse the given hollow crash tube with different contact conditions and notch positions. Also, to compare the results.

Bumper meshing:

The given Bumper geometry is meshed for size 6mm.

Quality Index

The quality index of the meshing is ok.

Case 1: Run the given crash tube with default parameters and given notch.

Type 7 interface is used.

The maximum Von Mises values is 7.356E-01. The Max Contact foruce is 9.375E+01.

The resultant force is lower at initial stage due to the presence of notch which splits the tube into two parts. Eventually the tube is crushed into a smallbox after which we can see peak in the force.

case 2: Change inacti parameter to 6

Inacti is changed to value 6.

Von Mises and Contact force.

The maximum Von Mises values is 7.428E+01. The Max Contact foruce is 9.375E+01.

Graph:

Since there is no initial penetration in our model there is no visible change in result.

Case 3: Create Type 11 contact

Type 11 contact is created.

Von Mises and Contact force.

The maximum Von Mises values is 6.348E+01. The Max Contact foruce is 3.44E+01. The peak stress and force is reduce when TYPE11 contact is used.

Case 4: Notch to be removed

Case 5: Create New notch in the middle

Von Mises and Contact force.

Case 6: Two notch on opposite faces of beam.

Two notches are created on only on opposite faces and results are checked.

Von Mises and Contact force.

Graph plot:

Conclusion:

  • During simulation it is inferred from the graph that the Internal energy of the system increase gradually towards the end of crash
  • The rigid wall forces, internal energy and contact forces are plotted. The contact force is more for case without any notch.
  • The notch helps in reducing the shock there by reducing the maximum contact force and Von Mesis stress.
