Assignment 2-RADIOSS Engine File Editing & 3D Meshing Challenge
Objective - To answer given questions with detailed explanations and mesh given components with quality criteria's mentioned.
- Check the material properties of the rail component and calculate the speed of sound in steel rail.

Document – FIRST_RUN_0000.rad
E=210000 N/mm2
Density = 0.0078 g/mm3
Poissons ratio = 0.29
We know,
`C=√(E/ρ)`
Therefore, `C=√(210000/0.0078)=5188.74`mm/ms
From the file it is clearly visible unit system considered is mm/ms
- The length of rail is about 1000mm. Calculate the time taken for a shock wave to travel from one end of the rail to other.
`∆t_c=l/c`
Where, `∆t_c`=Critical time step
L = length of element
And C = Speed of sound
Therefore `∆t_c=1000/5188.74=0.192`ms
- Time to sound to travel length of rail = 0.192 ms
- Edit the engine file so that the stress wave can be monitored, moving from one end of rail to the other during impact – this will require a termination time equal to the time it takes for the sound to travel the length of the rail (set on/RUN card)

- Tetra Mesh Housing Component - Tet Size - 5 mm, Tet Collapse - 0.15
Toggled Edges to get quality mesh.

Used Volume Tetra Mesh with element size 5, minimum element size as 3 and Tet Collapse as 0.2.
- Hex Mesh Arm with Element Size - 10 mm.

Supressed Free edges, made projections to continue flow and made multiple splits to get proper hex elements.

Made 2D elements on base plate and used Solipmap to create 3D elements.

Created faces on 3D elements then used Solidmap to create elements along the arm by using lines as destination and lines as along geometry.

Created faces on 3D mesh and used Solidmap to create mesh flow by using lines as destination and lines as along geometry.

Created multiple splits on boss location to get proper quads. Created 2D elements on circular surface. Created faces for 3D elements and made connectivity with 2D elements on circular face. Then used Solidmap with the 2D mesh and face mesh for along geometry.
Conclusion - After completing the assignment. Basic 3D meshing techniques and importing solver deck files and read input data has been learnt
