Discretisation of 3D Intake Manifold
AIM
The aim of this project is to discretise the 3D model into 1D GT Suite model
OBJECTIVES
The following objectives can be noted as
- Discretisation of Intake Manifold
- Effect of Discretisation length on simulation time
DISCRETIZATION OF 3D MODEL OF INTAKE MANIFOLD
In applied mathematics, discretization is the process of transferring continous functions, models, variables, and equations into discrete counterparts. This process is usually carried out as a first step toward making them suitable for numerical evaluation and implementation on digital computers. Dichotomization is the special case of discretization in which the number of discrete classes is 2, which can approximate a continuous variable as a binary variable.

The first step is to open the spaceclaim of GT Suite in which the STL converted file from CAD model. Then we have to see how to proceed further to open GEM 3D and import the geometry into it
Importing CAD model

Here we see that the 3D into the GEM 3D and to separate all the curves by different colours to differentiate between the various parts which are involved in the intake manifold.
Splitting of Runners

Here we have split the manifold into 4 runners with varying cross sections
Defining the Runners

So the runners are properly defined by using separate the curves option
Pipe Conversation

Then we discretise the following runners into pipes

The pipe diameter is defined by the user and the second diameter is selected based on the port 1 diameter. The yellow portion shows the discretised pipe versus the actual shape of the runner.

Conversion of Runners into pipes

This model is then numbered according to the flow direction and pipe option is selected for conversion of runner into pipe

The diameters are defined by user and then we click on next
Plenum separation

Similarly the plenum is separated using the splitting of the runners method
Final Model

This shows the final model after which we have added flow connections
Exporting Model

Discretised Model

This shows the discretised 1D model from the 3D model.
EFFECT OF DISCRETIZATION LENGTH

Case Setup

Results
Engine Performance

There are absloutely very minor changes for engine performance.
Run Summary

This shows that the second case in which we have a discretised length of 0.1mm then the simulation time increases exponentially.
CONCLUSION
- The 3D model is converted to 1D model using GEM 3D
- Effect of Simulation time and engine parameters are compared
- There is no changes with respect to engine performance but simulation time is very long
