Challenge

Assignment 1

AIM :- To explore the different tools and models used in GT SUITE software.

OBJECTIVES :-

In this challenge we have to describe following points are-

  • Exploring the GUI of GT SUITE and list down modules available.
  • Locating the time control flag, time step and solution control, and Integrator/solver type.
  • Explore intercooler and note down different settings like Run setup, Advanced setup, Plot setup and Output setup.
  • To calculate total heat transfer at charge air cooler and pressure drop across CAC.

THEORY AND INTRODUCTIONS :-

GT SUITE is a multiphysics CAE system simulation software. The foundation of GT SUITE is a versatile multiphysics plateform for constructing models of general systems based on many underlying fundamental libraries are-

  • Flow library (any fluid, gas or liquid or mixture)
  • Acoustics library (both linear and non linear)
  • Thermal library (all types of heat transfer)
  • Mechanical library (kinematics, multi body dynamics, frequency domain)
  • Electric and electromagnetic library (circuits, electro chemical devices)
  • Chemistry library ( chemical kinetics)
  • Controls library (signal processing) Buile in 3D CFD.
  • 3D FE (thermal and structural).

There are three branches in which all these fall under namely-

  • Template provides all the unfilled atributes required by models.
  • Objects are made from templates which contain all the required parts.
  • Parts are the ones which are drop onto the map.

1. Explore the GUI of GT SUITE and list down modules available with brief descriptions.

ANS.:-

Templates :- For creating any engine model we need to describe different templates as below-

Here have different templates like flow, mechanical, thermal electromagnetic control, External model links, Acoustics and General. By considering one or more templates we can create any model. In each template there have three levels i.e. from template we can create object and from object we can create different parts. There have also three branches i.e. components, connections and References.

# Flow :-

There are several components based on which the flow propagates. This medium helps in delivering the required matter to the mechanical components. The necessary parameters are tuned base on the type of medium we emphasise.

# MECHANICAL :-

In this module we have components for transmission. The parameters for size, shape and the required mechanism are altered for simulating.

# THERMAL :-

Essential components for heat transfer are needed tobe imparted for running our system effectively and effeciently.

# ELECTROMAGNETIC :-

Electric and magnetic components needed for transmitting and recieving signals, with need for charging and storing energy through essential devices are modelled here.

# CONTROL :-

Sensors and detectors are used to measure the output performance of the product being controlled, these measurments are used to provide corrective feedback to help and achieve desired performance.

1. Graphical user interface (GUI) :-

This is the view of GUI, which we can show just opening the GT SUITE. Here, in files there have resources and there have models, compound, Library, Subassembly, xLink and GT drive+ Also, thre have GT SUITE applications and Utilities.

2. Document creation wizard :-

This is the different documents we can created by using GT SUITE. There have diffrent extensions, these extensions are used at the time of creating new projects.

Different models are-

1. GT SUITE model :-

GT SUITE is the combination of all the application model. Here we can modeled different Engines, Coolings, Air conditioning etc. GT SUITE licence is applicable for every modeled, so if we have this licence then we can modeled any part which are mention here.

2. GT POWER model :-

It is applicable only for some modeled like Engine, Exhaust and Aerospace, other than these applications we can't modeled colling system, Fuel injections etc.

3. GT SUITEmp model :-

In this we can modeled other than engine. If we have this licence and we have to modeled engine part then it can't possible.

4. GT POWER lab model :-

In this licence we can created just template library but other than that we can't modeled. As showing above picture as of now no one model are created through this licence.

2. Locate following settings :-

i) Time control flag :-

It's the view of time control flag, here maximum and minimum simulations. One things keep in mind that the option of "Automatic Shut-off when steady state" enable because if we put 100 time steps and our solution will simulated at 20th period then due to enabling this option we run only 20 simulations and not 100 simulation otherwise by disabling this option simulation run till 100 iterations by overlapping one onother.

Here have two time control flag i.e. periodic and continues. Periodic is nothing but the event repeat itself after every specific cycle, i.e. in our case engine stroke repeat after every 180 degree so that after completing first cycle, second cycle starts and go on. In contineous it is opposite to the periodic.

ii) Time step and solution control :-

Here have explicit and implicit method, we have to select either or both method to create a flow control. If there have no flow circuits then we need not to consider any method. Here showing in which model explicit and implicit methods are used. Here have the basic concept of 'Couront Number'.

iii) Integrater/Solver type :-

There have different methods for Integratot/solver type, but for several modeling keep constant default methods i.e. Explicit runge kutta methods. For basic modelling we need not to change this setting. It's numerical method so that it used in Ordinary differential equation (ODE) controls.

Here, def = default and ign = ignore.

3. Explore intercooler tutorial and note down all settings of :-

1. Run setup :-

Run setup is used for running the simulations at specific number of cycles or specific number of time. Here have different control according to methods. The option of "Automatic Shut-off when steady state" is always on to save the time and find out the fixed number of time step. Maximum simulation duration chose among periodic and Contineous.

2. Advanced setup :-

Here need to put 'fixed time step size'. If there have any issue then select that option and click on 'Template help' at left side upper corner as shown in above figure. Here we can changes flow, mechanics, version, paths...etc.

3. Plot setup :-

Here we can see that activated plots. Which plot activated for which part, that we can see here. If we define the location that also showing here, which quantity we should defined that all are we can see here as of above setup.

4. Output setup :-

Here we can starage the files, but if we want to not stare anything then we can save our time and memory as well. Also, there have different different plots. Here we can suppress the plot It's useful when we run several cases like more than 100 then for each case we don't need each plot so for that we can supress here and after converging the solutions we can plot at that location. If there have any confusion we can get template help from upper left corner.

4. Problem :-

Diameter of cooler inlet and outlet pipe = 50mm,

Length of CAC= 1000mm,

Inlet mass flow rate = 1200 Kg/hr at 100 degC,

Outlet pressure 2 bar at 30 degC

Calculate the total heat transfer at charge air cooler (CAC)=?

Calculate pressure drop across CAC=?

SOL.:- D = 50mm = 0.05m,

L = 1000mm = 1m,

Mf = 1200/(60*60) = 0.33 Kg/sec,

P = 2e+5 Pa = 2 bar

Temperature difference = dt = 100-30 =70 degC = 70 + 273 = 343 k

Specific heat of water = C = 4.186 J/gm-DegC .....(considering)

1) Total heat transfer = Q = mf*C*dt = 0.33*(4.186e+3)*343

Total heat transfer at charge air cooler = 473.813 KJ

2) Pressure drop = rho*g*dH ...........(dH = drop, rho = density of water)

Density of water = 1000 kg/m^3 ........(Considering)

= 1000*9.81*(1-(2*0.05)) = 9810*0.9

Pressure drop across CAC = 8829 Kg/m^2 = 0.0883 Bar

DISCUSSIONS :-

For knowing the detailing about GT SUITE and POWER we must know the above terminology. Different modelling are used to finding the different stresess on engine. There have different time flag and time steps. Also there have different setup to run the simulation cases. Find out the total heat transfer and pressure drop across charge air cooler (CAC).
