Assignment 1

  1. Explore the GUI of GT SUITE and list down modules available with brief description. (15 marks)

Solution:

  1. GT-ISE – It is the interface module, where we could build models and run simulation by step by step creation and control of settings of each individual components such as cooler, valve train, combustion, etc.,

Modules available in GT suite are

  • FLOW:

Any fluid, gas, liquid or mixture that propagates. It serves as a medium to propagate and deliver the required matter to the mechanical components. Based on the type of medium the necessary parameters are tuned on.

  • MECHANICAL:

In this module, we consider all kinematics, multi-body dynamics and frequency domain for transmission. Parameters such as size, shape and the required mechanisms can be altered based on requirement.

  • THERMAL:

All components that are essential for all types of heat transfer (conduction convection radiation)

  • ELECTROMAGNETIC:

Circuits and electromechanical devices required for transmitting and receiving signals, with need for charging and storing energy through essential devices are modelled here.

  • CONTROL:

It involves Sensors and detectors used for signal processing to achieve desired performance

  • GEM3D – In this module, 3D models are imported and converted to 1 models aid processing in GT-SUITE.
  • GT-POST – In this module, the post processing results after simulation can be viewed. It allows us to combine results for plotting graphs and viewing animations of results.
  • VTDESIGN – This module is dedicated for valve train design and cam profiles.
  • GT-SPACECLAIM. It is used for creating and editing the imported 3 models. It is similar to the ansys space claim were we could create 3D models for analysis and also do geometry clean up.
  • OPTIMIZATION – In this Module, we could optimize the existing model w.r.t user input and an optimal solution out of possible alternatives can be foraged.
  1. Locate following settings:
  • Time control flag (5 Marks)

It shows the duration of simulation and variables for controlling time. The time control flag consists of the following options

  • periodic (for cyclic or periodic events eg. Engine combustion cylcle )
  • continuous (for non periodic events eg. Air flow throughintercooler)
  • Time step and solution control (5 Marks)

The numerical parameters that are required for explicit and implicit solver are defined in this setting.

This setting has 3 options namely:

  1. Flow control Explicit (Parameter under study whose variation w.r.t time is imperative
  2. Flow control Implicit (Parameter under study whose variation w.r.t time is not imperative)
  3. Flow control QS
  • Integrator/Solver type (5 Marks)

ODE solver used for numerical integration (time marching of ODE’s) is specified say Explicit – Runge Kutta Method.

  1. Explore intercooler tutorial and note down all settings of:
  • Run setup (5 Marks)
  • Advanced setup (5 Marks)
  • Plot setup (5 Marks)
  • Output setup (5 Marks)

4. Problem: (50 Marks)

Given

  • Diameter of cooler inlet and outlet pipe= 50 mm
  • Length of the CAC= 1000 mm
  • Inlet mass flow rate = 1200 kg/ h at 100 degC
  • Outlet pressure 2 bar at 30 deg C

Solution:

Input

OUTPUT

Simulation Dashboard

Pressure Drop = 0.0837 bar

Net Heat transfer rate = 8.73 kW

Cumulative Energy Loss = 2.04 kJ
