Assignment 1

1. Explore the GUI of GT SUITE and list down modules available with brief description.

GT SUITE model application are as follows:-

1. Acoustics:-

  • GT-SUITE include application to analyze a signal in the time domain by transforming it to the frequency domain. In addition, it is possible to calculate the frequency response of various system in the frequency domain.
  • An acoustic model is used in automatic speed recognition to represent the relationship between an audiosignal and the phonemes or other linguistic units that make up speech. The model is learned from set of audio recording and their corresponding transcript. It is created by taking audio recording of speech, and their test transcription and using software to create statistical representation of the sound that make up each word.

2. AC and Waste Heat Recovery:-

  • A refrigeration heat recovery device is indirect type of system in which a refrigerant to waste heat exhanger is installed between the host refrigeration system compressor and condensor. Water is circulated through one side of heat exchanger and hot refrigerant gas from the compressor is route through the other side.
  • Two phase refrigerant are used as the working fluid for a wide range of application. Many such application are used in mordern vehicle design in order to ensure passenger comfort or harnessing the power present in the high temperature exhaust gas from the engine. GT-SUITE is a multi disciplinary tool that can aid in the development of such system by accurately predicting the behaviour of such system in different stage of design.

3. After Treatment:-

  • Advanced engine and aftertreatment technologies in new generation automotive application have been developed with the aim of improvement in term of fuel economy and minimizing pollutant emission. As a result, the attraction toward using computationally efficient and at the same time reliable simulation tool in automotive application has been increasing over the last decades such model. When calibrated, can be exploited for design and optimization purpose, control strategies and sensitivity analysis of different parameter providing benefits in term of cost.

4. Cooling system and thermal Management Application:-

  • A controlling model for the cooling system of an engine was developed in order to reduce fuel consumption and engine emission through the use of controllable engine cooling component including an electrical water pump, an electrical fan and a heated thermostat.
  • Because engine thermal management task are typically distributed over several discipline and they concern different subsystem such as coolant, transmission, oil circuit, intercooler, heater and A/C system and component such as thermostats, radiator, fans and pumps, a comprehensive CAE design tool is require to integrate all of these related activites GT-SUITE is an advanced code for design and analysis of engine thermal management system that has been specifically designed to handle his wide range of heat management issue and discipline. As a result, GT-SUITE can be used to integrate all of the activities related to heat management to meet design objective such as engine durability, emission, fast warm up passenger cabin heating, component sizing and specification and system control.

5. Cranktrain Model:-

  • One of the two main source of forces, moment and torque which affect the dynamics of an IC engine is the cranktrain or the moving part which transmit torque and power for external else eg for propelling a vehicle the other is the combination, connecting rods and piston. Part of the crankshaft design, specifically the angular position of crankpin, is very much a function of engine configuration that is whether the engine is 4 or 2 strokes, inline or V-type and the number of cylinder. In GT-SUITE cranktrain, user do not explicity describe angular placement of throws on the crankshaft.

6. Engine Performance Model:-

  • Engine performance is often characteristic by the engine operating behaviour in the speed-load domain, for eg, the behaviour of emission, fuel consumption, noise, mechanical and thermal loading.
  • GT-SUITE which include the GT power engine library, is the leading engine and vehicle simulation tool used by engine worker and supplier.
  • The engine performance and acoustics library is designed for steady state and transient simulation and can be used for analysis of engine and powertrain control. It is applicable to all type of internal combustion engine and provides the user with money component to model almost any advanced concept.

7. Fuel Injection Model:-

  • The injection performance and fuel atomization depend on the injector design: geometric characteristic of atomized fuel jet, fuel spray structure, fuel atomization fineness and a number of other parameter of the fuel delievery process. To ensure high efficiency combustion of fuel and consequently, obtain high technical and economic indicator of the diseal engine, it is necessary to organize a rational injection. The quality of fuel atomization is characterized by its fitness and at all stage of injection, including the inital and the final stage, when there is a low fuel pressure upstream the injector.

8. Gear Chain and Belt Drive:-

  • Geartrain, chain or belt drive system transfer rotational motion and power between mechanical 1D rotational/ torsional system. They can also be used to achieve a desired kinematic speed ratio, as well as torque reduction. In engine, gear chain or belt system, are used primarily as timir of drive for sub system such as mechanically actuated valvetrain and injections system and also to transmit power to auxiliary system such as oil, coolant, etc. pumps, supercharger or power turbine. The detailed dynamic of these system are analyzed in order to ensure that their transmission, noise and vibration and durability characteristic meet acceptable design criteria.

9. General and Advanced simulation application:-

  • GT-SUITE being a single package, allow modelling of these application both independently, as has traditionally been the norm in the industry, or with several of these system in one model to get the full integrated effect of the system. For example, consider the cooling circuit with charge air cooler and EGR cooler and its link to engine performance, this can be readily analyzed in a single model for warm up analysis and for design of a combined cooling circuit and engine.

10. Process for Linearization of Engine FRMS:-

  • The step that need to be followed to generate the linear representation of GT-SUITE V2018 fast running engine model around a given set of operating point.
  • Workflow summary
  1. Prepare the FRM model for linearization
  2. Setup a DOE which perturbs the FRM model around operating point
  3. Run the " Neural Network Wizard for Lubrication"
  4. Create a linear model for each of the operating points.

11. Lubrication Application Manual:-

  • GT-SUITE is a great tool for modelling engine lubrication system, using a compressible 1D CFD solution that solves for mass, momentum, energy and species. The primary purpose of modelling and lubrication system is to predict flow rate and pressure distribution throughout the system. Other studies can be performed as well, including primary, studying resonance and pump dynamics. Additionally, a lubrication system model can be integrated into a cooling system to study model can be integrated into a cooling system to steady the complete thermal behaviour of the engine.

12. Optimization Manual:-

  • Optimization is the process of maximizing or minimizing a model: output by systemtically changing one or more input variable. An optimizer is a automated process that iteratively sets the input variable runs the model, evaluate the model output and change the input again to achieve some optimization objective or until sime stopping criteria are met. An optimizer uses a search method or algorithms to intelligently determine the next set of factor values in a few model eveluation as possible, inch each excuation of the model may be computationally expensive and time consuming

13. Valve train Application Manual:-

  • GT-SUITE offer a complete set of tools aimed at multi body dynamics analysis of IC Engine valve train. The valve train library, along with the 2D mechanics and 3D mechanics libaries are the core tool boxes and they are applicable to a broad range of valve train mechanism may be dynamically analyzed as rigid bodies, bodies with user specified lumped mass and stiffness distribution, or even as flexible bodies with distributed mass and stiffness. While valve train are planar mechanism, the above combination of GT-SUITE tool boxes can be used to model partially or fully 3 D mechanism as well.

14. Vehicle Driveline and HEV:-

  • The control objective of this is minimize fuel consumption while considering performance and driveability. The optimized control strategy to achieve this ojective can be found into two step, finding the optimal control for the minimum fuel consumption first and then taking driveability into consideration.

2. Locate the following setting

1. Time control flag:-

Defines the global simulation type with regard to time. It can be one of the following options:

A. PERIODIC:-

Periodic indicates that the model contains at least one circuit which contains a periodic event (i.e. engine cylinder “cycle”) and therefore requires tracking of results with respect to angle over each cycle. Any model that includes an ' EngineCrankTrain', ' CrankAnalysis' , or ' EngineCrankShaft' part should use the periodic option. Note that the simulation duration for a periodic simulation can be specified in cycles or in time, whichever is most convenient.

B. CONTINOUS:-

Continuous indicates that the simulation includes no periodic event, and therefore has no need to track results with respect to a cyclic angle. This is the typical setting for models that contain only quasi-steady fluid circuits such as coolant or underhood air. The simulation duration for a continuous simulation is typically specified in time.

2. Time step and solution control:-

It is reference to object that can be used to define the numerical parameters for the explicit, implicit, or quasi-steady flow solver, respectively.

3. Integrator/Solver type:-

Integrator/solver type used in the time-marching of all ODEs including mechanical, electrical and magnetic libraries.
