Assignment 1
Objective: To explore GT Suite and simulate intercooler using the GT-Power and calculating Heat transfer and pressure drop across Charge Air Cooler
- Explore the GUI of GT SUITE and list down modules available with brief description.
GT-SUITE is the industry-leading simulation tool with capabilities and libraries aimed at a wide variety of applications and industries. It offers engineers functionalities ranging from fast concept design to detailed system or sub-system/component analyses, design optimization, and root cause investigation.
GUI of GT-suite :
The GUI of GT-SUITE is divided in various functional regions like Tree Pane, Modelling Central Screen and various options for setting up the pre-processing of the model. The Tree Pane is further classified into 5 different categories Flow, Mechanical, Thermal, References, Acoustics and General.
The HOME tab consists of a big window where model is created. After creating a model , the ‘Model Setup’ is done in which what solvers are required to be used , simulation and control options to run the case setup are set. In the ‘RUN’ tab , the simulation is run with and the results can be viewed using the ‘View Results’ tab in GT Post Processing application.
Following are the modules available in GT SUITE:
- Aerospace Systems
- Air Conditioning/ Waste Heat Recovery
- Cooling Systems and Thermal Management
- Crank train and Crankshaft Dynamics
- Engine Performance and Acoustics
- Exhaust Aftertreatment
- Evaporative Emissions
- Engine Real-Time
- Fuel Injection
- Hydraulics and Pneumatics
- Lubrication Circuits
- Transmission and Shift Quality
- Vehicle and HEV Fuel Economy and Performance
- ValveTrain Kinematics and Dynamics
- Timing and Front-End Drive Systems
- Locate following settings:
- Time control flag
The time control flag is located in the ‘Run setup’ command window under ‘TimeControl’ option. It let’s you set the ‘Simulation Time’ for the simulation to run.
- Time step and solution control
The Time step and solution control option is located in the ‘Run setup’ command window under ‘ODEControl’ option. It lets you set the ‘Simulation Time’ for the simulation to run.
- Integrator/Solver type
- Explore intercooler tutorial and note down all settings of:
- Run setup
- Advanced setup
- Plot setup
- Output setup
- Problem:
Given
- Diameter of cooler inlet and outlet pipe= 50 mm
- Length of the CAC= 1000 mm
- Inlet mass flow rate = 1200 kg/ h at 100 degC
- Outlet pressure 2 bar at 30 deg C
- Calculate the total heat transfer at Charge air cooler (CAC)
- Calculate pressure drop across CAC
