MODELLING OF SUNSEEKER PREDATOR YACHT AND RENDERING
SOFTWARE USED
- SOLIDWORKS
- SOLIDWORKS VISUALIZE
OBJECTIVE
To design the Sunseek Predator Yacht, its parts, assembly and render.
ABSTRACT
This project involves the modelling of the Predator Sunseeker yacht. Sunseeker is one of the famous luxurious yacht makers in the world. The Predator 108 model of this company is modelled using Solidworks. The yacht is modelled by using primarily surface features and occasionally solid features.
BLUE PRINT SETUP
The blueprint of the model is used in the modelling. The blueprints include the front, side ,back, top and bottom views. These blueprints are arranged in the front, right, back, top and bottom planes respectively using Insert-picture tool. The Back and Top planes are created as a Reference geometry by using the existing planes and giving the required offset. This setup is named as blueprint setup and is used as a reference in the modelling of the subsequent parts and components.
COMPONENTS
The 3D modelling is done in Solidworks 2019 software and consists of modelling individual parts and then assembling them together. The individual parts are
- Propeller
- Radar
- Hull
- Garage Door
- Front Seat
- Middle Seat
- Rear Seat
- Superstructure
- Radar Mast
PROPELLER
Propeller is the part that propels the ship forwards and consists of turbine blades.
Feature
- Revolve Boss
- Loft Boss
- Extrude Cut
- Fillet
- Circular Pattern
- This is the simplest part to design and consists mainly of a revolve feature for the main hub and a multi plane loft feature for the blades that are then patterned around the hub.
- The sketch is drawn on the appropriate plane and it is made into a solid using a revolve feature.
- The loft is made by drawing 2 rectangles in two different planes that are slightly displaced from each other.
- The loft feature is used with the 2 rectangles selected. The green guide points are ensured to be along the same sides of the rectangle.
- An extrude cut is made on the flat surface for connecting it with the hub in the hull.
- The part is finished by applying a series of fillets and then applying the appearances.
RADAR
The radar is the part that is used to sense the surrounding when the visibility becomes compromised.
Features
- Extrude Boss
- Extrude Cut
- Sketch Driven Pattern
- Fillet
- Split Line
- This part is essentially made by an extrude and fillets. The cross-section is sketched and then extruded to the required length.
- The nuts are made by extruding the circular sketch and then applying the fillets.
- The nuts are finished by creating an extrude cut in the form of a hexagon and then patterning it around the side.
- For the pattern, sketch points are made and a curve based pattern is used.
- The text is made on the surface by using a sketch containing an inserted text to split the surface.
- The part is Completed by applying the required appearances.
HULL
The hull is the main part of the ship and is the part that allows it to float in water. It is also the largest part in the assembly.
Features
- Projected Curves
- Loft Surface
- Extrude Surface
- Trim Surface
- Knit Surface
- Extrude Cut
- Sweep
- Save Bodies
- Fillet
- Chamfer
- Mirror
- This part is modelled using surface features. The model is started by using the blueprint setup and then proceeds with creating projected curves and plane sketches for making the surface.
- These sketches are made using lines and splines. Once the starting sketch, ending sketch and the guide curves ie. the top portion, side portion and the curve structure at the back are sketched, the surface loft feature is used to create the surface that forms the bottom side of the yacht hull.
- These steps are followed in making the upper portion of the hull and the deck surface.
- The deck os made using a line and an extruded surface feature. After this the surfaces are perfectly cut out by using the trim surfaces feature. The surfaces are then joined to form a single surface body using the knit command.
- All the edges are checked for perfect knitting as any disruptions or open edges might make the body unsuitable for solid making. This is done by checking for any blued edges.
- The final surface is made by using the mid plane. This surface is ensured to be a flat plane surface as this would be where the surface will be mirrored. The surface is knitted and the try to make solid is enabled. This makes a solid body from the surfaces.
- The next steps include adding smaller components and features. These include the garage and the garage doors that are made using the cut extrude feature and saving the body separately for the garage door.
- The other features include the stern of the boat that is made by extruding a rectangle and applying necessary fillets and chamfers. The hand railings of the top are made using sweep feature.
- The railing sketch is a pattern of zigzag lines that are filleted at the corners.
- The windows and ports are made using an extrude cut and then applying sweep curve to the corners. The Hull stakes at the bottom are made using a series of splines, offsetting them to thicken the contour and then extruding them as solid bodies.
- The rudders are a series of circular and rectangular extrudes that are patterned across the back of the Hull.
- The hull is finished by adding the appearance and decals of the deck and the other regions.
GARAGE DOOR
This part is made from the cut out body of the hull.
Feature
- Extrude Cut
- Shell
- Fillet
- Split
- The extra portion of the garage door is extrude-cut to the bring the body to the required thickness and a shell feature applied for a small thickness.
- This is followed by mirroring the half to get the full garage door component. The part is finished by adding a cylindrical hinge using extrude feature for connecting it to the hull and then mirroring the other half to form the complete garage door.
- The appearance is applied as requiredand the text is inserted and a split surface feature is used to imprint them.
FRONT SEAT
Front seat is the part of the seating arrangement that is placed at the starting of the superstructure.
Feature
- Suface Sweep
- Trim Surface
- Knit Surface
- Extrude Boss
- Extrude Cut
- Revolve
- Mirror
- Fillet
- This structure is designed to be seated just beside the superstructure and thus the blueprint is used as a reference along with the deck from the hull.
- The part is modelled using a series of surfaces and then combined to form a solid body.
- The sketch cross-section is sketched and the surface-sweep feature is used. The remaining surfaces are made using surface fill.
- This is done by sketching the boundary surfaces and then using the surface fill feature.
- The outstanding edges are cut and joined using extend/trim features. The knitting process is checked at surface edges so that the edges become black.
- This is ensured by using a series of extend/trim features to ensure that surfaces are in contact with each other.
- The cushions are made by offsetting the surface by 5mm and then extruding them to form separate bodies.
- These are finished with fillets and finally completed by adding appropriate appearances of white and grey to the seat body and cushions respectively.
MIDDLE SEAT
The middle seat is the furniture that is seated just behind the superstructure.
Feature
- Extrude Boss
- Extrude Cut
- Fillet
- Chamfer
- Mirror
- This consists of a series of sofas and a central table. These are made by using simple extruded parts and chamfers owing to their rectangular structure.
- The base surface is sketched and extruded.
- The resting surface is then sketched and the extrude boss is used to extrude it to the required height.
- The The table is made similarly by a series of extrudes.
- The part is completed by adding the necessary appearances.
REAR SEAT
The rear seat consists of the ending of the upper deck and the furniture consisting of two large sized sofas and an integrated cupboard.
Feature
- Swept Surface
- Trim Surface
- Ruled Surface
- Offset Surface
- Extrude Boss
- Extrude Cut
- Fillet
- Chamfer
- Loft Boss
- This part also includes the gates for the steps leading to the lower deck and the flag.
- The sofas are designed by using surface features and then knitting them together to form a solid.
- Initially half of the sofa is made.
- This is done by sketching the cross-section and then surface sweepingto form the supporting face.
- The adjacent side is made from a sketch by surface-extrude. The gates are made using sweep features.
- The flag post is a revolve feature and the flag is an open surface created using loft features and 3d sketches.
SUPER STRUCTURE
The Superstructure is that part of the yacht that contains the cockpit, control room and other on-deck features. The part is modelled using the deck surface feature of the hull using which the initial sketch of the superstructure is drawn.

- Trim Surface
- Loft Surface
- Filled Surface
- Extend Surface
- Knit Surface
- Delete Face
- Extrude Boss
- Extrude Cut
- Sweep Boss
- Dome
- Fillet
- Chamfer
- Mirror
- This is then turned into a surface by a surface extrude. The subsequent layers of the superstructure is made using a series of sketches and surface features such as surface extrudes, ruled surfaces and surface lofts.
- The layers are merged as they are made. The surfaces are ensured to be intersecting each other.
- This is done by using the extend& trim surfaces feature. This ensures that the surfaces are all intersecting properly.
- The surfaces are finally knitted using the knit feature.
- All the surfaces are ensured to be knitted properly by ensuring no open blue edges are present.
- After this being ensured the surfaces are merged into a solid body by using the knit command along with the try to form solid checkbox the window sills are made using rectangular sketches and the extruding the sketches from the surface of the window glass.
- After this the final touches are made. These include the window sills, jacuzzi, front hood furnitures and other minor fillets and features.
- The jacuzzi is essentially a series of circular extruded and a surface fill feature as a water layer.
- The Superstructure is finished by giving the appropriate appearances to the components.
- These include white appearance to the entire body, custom grey for the window glasses and blue appearance to the water layer of the jacuzzi.
RADAR MAST
The radar is the part that contains the radomes, antenna, horns and other minor communication components.
Features
- Extrude Boss
- Revolve Boss
- Projected Curves
- Sweep Boss
- Fillet
- Chamfer
- Dome
- Mirror
- Shell
- This component is modelled mainly by mirroring the part, given that it is symmetric about the mid plane.
- The suface bodies of the superstructure is taken for reference.
- The base is made using an extrude boss of the sketch drawn using the blueprint as a reference, the supporting structures are made by a series of sweep curves and the dome itself made from a revolve feature of the sketch representing the cross section.
- The horns are made by revolving their cross section and then making a shell feature.
- The part is finished by giving an appearance and then mirroring the other half.
ASSEMBLY
- The hull is the first part to be fixed in the assembly.
- Next part to be fixed is the superstructure.
- The superstructure is inserted into the assembly via insert components.
- It automatically gets alligned with the assembly.
- Then the radar mast is inserted.
- It also automatically gets alligned with the assembly.
- The front and the middle seats are alligned in the similar way.
- The rear seat is alligned with distance mate.
- The garage door is made concentric mate with one of the leading edge of the hull.
- The propellor are made to float by concentric mate.
- The radar is also made as floating component in the assembly.
