SURFACE AND SOLID MODELLING OF SUNSEEKER PREDATOR YACHT WITH ASSEMBLY

YACHT

A yacht is a sail or power vessel used for pleasure, cruising, or racing. There is no standard definition, so the term applies to such vessels that have a cabin with amenities that accommodate overnight use.

The term, yacht, originates from the Dutch word “jacht” which means “hunt”, and originally referred to light, fast sailing vessels that the Dutch Republic navy used to pursue pirates and other transgressors around and into the shallow waters of the Low Countries.

ABSTRACT

This report involves in the design, assembly and rendering of the Sunseeker Predator Yacht Model, that has the beautiful look and Power vessel used for pleasure and racing. It has that superstructure and a garage for the vehicle. The yacht is designed and assembled in solidworks and rendered using Solidworks Visulaize and decals are fixed with the Photoview 360 to give a realistic look.

MODELLING

The Yacht is built through feature-based surface and solid modelling features and consists of the following components,

  • Propeller
  • Radar
  • Hull
  • Garage Door
  • Front Seat
  • Middle Seat
  • Rear Seat
  • Super Structure
  • Radar Mast

PROPELLER

A propeller is a device with a rotating hub and radiating blades that are set at a pitch to form a helical spiral, that, when rotated, performs an action which is similar to Archimedes' screw. It transforms rotational power into linear thrust by acting upon a working fluid, such as water or air.

Tools/Features:

  • Revolve
  • Cut Extrude
  • Surface Loft
  • Fillet
  • Circular Pattern

The propeller was a easy model used revolve and the surface loft for the fins and the circular pattern to make the number of fins. Then the perfect appearance is given to the model.

RADAR

Radar is a vital navigation component for safety at sea and near the shore. Captains need to be able to maneuver their ships within feet in the worst of conditions and to be able to navigate "blind", when there is no visibility at night or due to bad weather. In addition to vessel-based marine radars, in port or in harbor, shore-based vessel traffic service radar systems are used by harbormasters and coast guard to monitor and regulate ship movements in busy waters.

Tools/Features:

  • Extrude
  • Cut Extrude
  • Fillet
  • Mirror
  • Sketch Driven Pattern
  • Split Line

The radar is the rotating component to be placed in the radar mast. This part is designed with just extrudes and the text is done using the sketch driven pattern and split line.

HULL

The hull of a ship is the most notable structural entity of the ship. To define the hull, it can be said that it is the watertight enclosure of the ship, which protects the cargo, machinery, and accommodation spaces of the ship from the weather, flooding, and structural damage.

Tools/Features:

  • Project Curve
  • Composite Curve
  • Surface Loft
  • Surface Extend
  • Surface Trim
  • Surface Fill
  • Surface Knit
  • Shell
  • Boss- Extrude
  • Cut Extrude
  • Swept Boss
  • Revolve Boss
  • Dome
  • Curve Pattern
  • Linear Pattern
  • Fillet
  • Chamfer
  • Mirror
  • Split

The hull is the model with a high difficulty. The surface loft, and surface trim/Extend, surface knit, surface fill is used at many occasions to make the model solid. The Windows and the railing also made with the sweep feature and the planes where created many more. The decals were kept before that the stairs where made with the extrudes boss and fillets were used at the respective places.

GARAGE DOOR

A Garage door is placed at the back side of the hull part, where either it can open manually or by an electric motor. Garage doors are frequently large enough to accommodate automobile and other vehicles. Small garage doors may be made in a single panel that tilts up and back across the garage ceiling.

Tools/Features:

  • Split
  • Shell
  • Text

The Garage door is constructed from the solid body cut from the hull model. Here the extra solids were just removed and shelled. A shaft hole is given for the rotation. The text is done in the garage door.

FRONT SEAT

Front Seat is placed at front of the hull part which is placed with the pillow and bed with good comfort.

Tools/Features:

  • Project Curve
  • Swept Surface
  • Loft Surface
  • Ruled Surface
  • Surface Extend
  • Surface Knit
  • Extrude
  • Mirror
  • Cut Extrude
  • Fillet
  • Chamfer.

The front seat is a part that has projected curve used with the surface features. The surface knit is used for the gap fills. Extrude is used for the spa bed and fillet, chamfer are used.

MIDDLE SEAT

Middle Seat is placed at the rear side of the super structure with the center table and it made with the good bed part.

Tools/Features:

  • Extrude
  • Surface Offset
  • Cut Extrude
  • Fillet

The middle seat is a rectangle one. Extrude Boss is used at the most occasions. The fillet and chamfer is done at the necessary areas. The table is also made at the middle of the model with just extrudes and the cut extrudes for the design.

REAR SEAT

Rear seat is also placed at the rear part of the hull part and is attached with the bed and it is attached with the flag and gate.

Tools/Features:

  • Curves
  • Surface Loft
  • Surface Rule
  • Surface Knit
  • Extrude
  • Mirror
  • Cut Extrude
  • Pattern
  • Swept Boss

The rear seat is curved shape model so that the surface tools and features are used. The model is created solid so there is a use of surface trim, extend and knit. The sweep is used for the gate and the flag pole. The 3D sketch is sketched at the flag pole and surface fill to make the flag. Appearance are done with the suitable colours.

SUPER STRUCTURE

A superstructure is an extended construction of any building or platform that rises above the rest of the building or platform in a distinct manner. The word comes from a combination of two Latin words, the Latin prefix ‘super’ means in addition or above or in excess of, whereas the stem word ‘structure’ means to build or to heap up. Thus, superstructure means to add a construction to an already existing structure. In ships this is the name given to the part of the ship that emerges from the deck.

Tools/Features:

  • Curve
  • Surface Sweep
  • Surface Rule
  • Surface Extend
  • Surface Extrude
  • Surface Trim
  • Surface Fill
  • Surface Knit
  • Offset Surface
  • Sweep base
  • Extrude Cut
  • Extrude Boss
  • Fillet
  • Chamfer
  • Delete face
  • Mirror

Superstructure is a most important part in the yacht model as it occupies the shape and look of the yacht. Here most of the surface features are used to make up the solid of the superstructure and then it is mirrored. The other linkages like wipers, doors and glass roofs are made with the extrude cut.

RADARMAST

Marine radars are X band or S band radars on ships, used to detect other ships and land obstacles, to provide bearing and distance for collision avoidance and navigation at sea. They are electronic navigation instruments that use a rotating antenna to sweep a narrow beam of microwaves around the water surface surrounding the ship to the horizon, detecting targets by microwaves reflected from them, generating a picture of the ship's surroundings on a display screen.

Tools/Features:

  • Extrude
  • Revolve
  • Cut Extrude
  • Sweep Surface
  • Fillet
  • Chamfer

The Radarmast is the part that is placed on the superstructure. The revolve for the lights and Extrudes for the antennae. The sweep comments are used for the linkage and support for the light. A horn is revolved and shelled. The mirror feature is used for a full model.

ASSEMBLY

Hull is the first component inserted into the assembly model and fixed with respect to the planes. Then the components are inserted one by one into the assembly section and relations with the planes made them to place directly in the place where they are meant to be.

The midplane of the hull is used for all the components that are inserted except the propeller. The garage door is made concentric with the shaft kept for it and the radar is also mad concentric with the radar mast as they are the rotating components. Also, the 3 propellers are also made concentric with the hull model as they are also the rotating parts.

Thus, the garage door, radar and propeller are underdefined in the assembly tree, and all other parts are made coincident with the hull surface.

RENDERING

The final assembly model is rendered using Visualize and Photoview 360 suitable decals for the hull and stairs. This rendered yacht is used to give a realistic look to it.
