Analysis on a plate with a hole
AIM: To perform a static analysis on two models of plate with holes and study the results obtained.
Implementation:
Case 1:
The model is made using solidworks where it is made in a single sketch by creating centre rectangle and centre hole of the prescribed dimensions and then extruded to a thickness of 30mm. This model is now ready for the static analysis where one end is fixed and the other end is loaded in the longitudinal direction in order to stretch the component and study the results on the plate with a hole.
First the material is selected to be as Alloy steel, then the fixtures and load of 1000N are enabled. Then a fine mesh was made in order to have a better accuracy in the results and then the simulation is ran to get the final results of stress, strain and displacement respectively.
The mesh for the case 1
The above is the window where all the results obtained are compared at once. Here we can observe that there is a deformation in the component which is way far less i.e. around 5.24e-04mm with a stress of 1.209 MPa and a strain of 4.515e-06. The yield strength is way far high than the maximum stress on the component so can conclude that the component is safe. Here it is observed that the maximum stress is experienced at the hole as there is the least area when compared to the other sections and there are 2 points at the hole that experiences the maximum stress as when axial load acts on a plate with a hole, the stress would be max at the points on the hole which are on the axis that is perpendicular to the axial load direction path. This is the stress concentration at these points where the area changes abruptly.
Case 2:
The model is made using solidworks where it is made in a single sketch by creating centre rectangle, centre hole and then a hole of 30mm diameter at center to center distance of 90mm from the central hole and then this new hole is mirrored to get another circle on the other side. All these are done according to the prescribed dimensions and then extruded to a thickness of 30mm.
This is the mesh for the case 2 which is a finer mesh.
The above is the window where all the results obtained are compared at once. Here we can observe that there is a deformation in the component which is way far less i.e. around 5.66e-04mm with a stress of 1.163 MPa and a strain of 4.287e-06. The yield strength is way far high than the maximum stress on the component so can conclude that the component is safe. Here it is observed that the maximum stress is experienced at the central hole as there is least area when compared to the other sections and there are 2 points at that central hole that experiences the maximum stress as when axial load acts on a plate with a hole, the stress would be max at the points on the hole which are on the axis that is perpendicular to the axial load direction path. This is the stress concentration at these points where the area changes abruptly.
Conclusion:
On comparing both the cases, it is absorbed that the maximum stress in case 2 is lexs than that of the case 1 and the displacement & strain of case 2 is more than case 1. This is because of the inclusion of additional circles in the component i.e. we can observe stress variation due to change in the area. In case 2 when the load of 1000N is applied on the the component, it's effect reduces as length proceeds towards the fixed end. There is an additional circle as coming from the load application towards the fixed end, where the stress concentration due to change in area causes the deformation and as further proceeded the effect of the force reduces there by the maximum stress is less comapred to that of the case 1 but the displacement and strain are more in case 2 than case 1 for this reason. The factor of safety is more in case 2 than case 1 as the maximum stress is less in case 2, stating that the component is safe with the additional holes in it there by the stress distribution increases and the failure chances reduces and also the weight reduces.
