Analysis on a plate with a hole
Aim:
To compare the performance of 2 separate plates with different hole geometries by performing static structural analysis using SOLIDWORKS simulation (FEA).
CASE 1
Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the centre
Diameter=60mm
Boundary conditions:
Material-Alloy steel
One end fixed
Force-1000N (Tensile)
Procedure:
- First, the model was created using SOLIDWORKS taking the dimensions given above.
- A new static study was created and the boundary conditions were applied.
- Mesh was created and the simulation was run.

CASE 2
Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the centre
Diameter=60mm
Two holes of 30 mm diameter which are placed 90mm away from the central hole on both sides
Boundary conditions:
Material-Alloy steel
One end fixed
Force-1000N (Tensile)
Procedure:
- First, the model was created using SOLIDWORKS taking the dimensions given above.
- A new static study was created and the boundary conditions were applied.
- Mesh was created and the simulation was run.

Conclusions:
- The above results show that the increase in the number of holes reduces stress. The stress concentration can also be reduced by: 1. Avoid sharp edges 2. Filleting the edges and with large fillet diameter.
- The plate with 3 holes has almost negligibly high displacement value by order of 0.421*10^-4 mm.
- The plate with 1 hole has higher strain by order of 0.018*10^-6.
