Analysis on a plate with a hole
Aim:
To model two different types of plates and made a finite element analysis (static) on both plates. To suggest the best one out of two plates from the results of the analysis.
Objectives:
- To model a plate with a hole at the centre.
- To model another plate with three holes on it.
- To made the finite element analysis (static) on both plates.
- To suggest the best on out of two plates.
Input parameters:
Case 1:
Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm
Case 2:
Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm
Two holes of 30 mm diameter which are placed 90mm away from the central hole on both sides.
In both cases, one of the short side of the plates is fixed and the force of 1000N is applied on the other end of the plate so that the plate is stretched.
Part modelling:
Case 1:
The plate which is designed based on the input parameters is shown below,
Case 2:
The plate which is designed based on the input parameters is shown below,
Simulation setup:
Initially, the type of material for the object should be assigned. In both cases, the common material of alloy steel is assigned.
The fixed geometry on the object is assigned.
Case 1:
Case 2:
The force of 1000N is applied on the face opposite to the face of fixed geometry.
Case 1:
Case 2:
The fine mesh is applied on both objects to get the best results.
Case 1:
Case 2:
Results and discussion:
Case 1:
Stress plot:
The stress plot explains that the stress is maximum at the circumference of the hole at the centre. The vonMises stress in the plate has a maximum value of 1.210e+06 N/m^2. The stress value differs from 3.425e+04 N/m^2 to 1.210e+06 N/m^2.
Strain plot:
The strain value is also maximum at the circumference of the hole similar to the stress. The strain value differs from 2.339e-07 to 4.476e-06.
Displacement plot:
The displacement is maximum at the face on which the force is applied. Due to the application of force, the object deforms and displaced to a maximum distance of 5.240e-04 mm along the direction of force.
Case 2:
Stress plot:
The stress plot explains that the stress is maximum at the circumference of the hole at the centre. The vonMises stress in the plate has a maximum value of 1.162e+06 N/m^2. The stress value differs from 2.935e+03 N/m^2 to 1.162e+06 N/m^2.
Strain plot:
The strain value is also maximum at the circumference of the hole similar to the stress. The strain value differs from 1.542e-08 to 4.341e-06.
Displacement plot:
The displacement is maximum at the face on which the force is applied. Due to the application of force, the object deforms and displaced to a maximum distance of 5.665e-04 mm along the direction of force.
Comparison table:
| SI. No | Max. stress value(N/mm^2) | Max. strain value | Max. displacement value(mm) |
| Case 1 (plate with one hole) | 1.21 | 4.476e-06 | 5.240e-04 |
| Case 2 (plate with three holes) | 1.16 | 4.341e-06 | 5.665e-04 |
The case 1 plate can withstand a maximum stress of 1.21N/mm^2 but the case 2 plate can withstand merely equal stress of 1.16N/mm^2. The case 2 plate will be the perfect choice by considering the amount of material and cost. The case 2 plate mostly compensate the case 1 plate with less amount of material. So, case 2 plate with three holes will be the perfect choice.

Conclusion:
Thus, the two different types of plates are modelled and FEA was done.
