Analysis on a plate with a hole
Aim : Perform a static analysis on two models of plate with holes. You will have to create the model in Solidworks and perform the analysis.
Introduction :
The dimensions for the first case is as follows:
CASE 1
Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm
The dimensions for the second case is as follows:
CASE 2
Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm
Two holes of 30 mm diameter which are placed 90mm away from the central hole on both sides.
Apply a fixed relation to one of the short side of the plate and apply a force of 1000N on the other such that the plate is stretched.
Run the analysis and compare the results for stress, strain and displacement.
Basic theory on the simulation :
Simulation modeling solves real-world problems safely and efficiently. It provides an important method of analysis which is easily verified, communicated, and understood.
The ability to analyze the model as it runs sets simulation modeling apart from other methods, such as those using Excel or linear programming.
Lets talk about some fundamentals theory,
Stress : The term stress (s) is used to express the loading in terms of force applied to a certain cross-sectional area of an object. From the perspective of loading, stress is the applied force or system of forces that tends to deform a body.
Strain: Mechanical strain is a geometric measure of deformation representing the relative displacement between particles in a material body. Strain is caused by external constraints or loads. There are two types of strain: elastic and plastic.
Entire case setup :
First of all create the Geometry,
Then apply the following steps ,
- Creating a Study. The first step in performing analysis is to create a study.
- Assigning Material. - in our case alloy steel is used
- Applying Fixtures. - shown in below fig.
- Applying Force/ Pressure. we are applying tensile force = 1000 N
- Meshing the Model and Running the Study.
- Visualizing the Results.
- Verifying the Results.
For case 1 ,
Assigning Material. - in our case alloy steel is used
Applying Fixtures. - shown in below fig
Applying Force/ Pressure. we are applying tensile force = 1000 N
Meshing the Model and Running the Study.
Results:
Stress:
Displacement:
Strain :
For case 2 ,
Assigning Material. - in our case alloy steel is used
Applying Fixtures. - shown in below fig
Applying Force/ Pressure. we are applying tensile force = 1000 N
Meshing the Model and Running the Study.
Results:
Stress:
Displacement:
Strain :
Comparing the Results :
case 1).
Case 2).
conclusion :
By ,Comparing both the Resutls
The Stress , Strain , Displacement Results are Very Similar in Both the Cases .
but it can be observed that the max. stress in case 1 is 1,193,529,500 and for case 2 is 1,134,844,750 N/mm^2.
it is because of extra holes which reduces the stress concentration .
hence , stress is proportional to strain te strain also descreases in case 2.
