ANALYSIS OF PLATES WITH HOLE USING SOLIDWORKS SIMULATION
1.AIM :
PERFORM STATIC ANALYSIS ON 2 MODELS OF PLATES WITH HOLES USING SOLIDWORKS SIMULATION
2. OBJECTIVE :
- To create the 2 models in Solidworks.
- To perform the analysis and compare the results for stress, strain and displacement.
3.INTRODUCTION :
When loads are applied to a body, the body deforms and the effect of loads is transmitted throughout the body. The external loads on body leads to genration of stress in body to render the body into a state of equilibrium.
Linear Static analysis calculates displacements, strains,stresses, and reaction forces under the effect of applied loads. The linear static analysis makes the assumptions that all loads are applied slowly and gradually until they reach their full magnitudes. After reaching their full magnitudes, loads remain constant in magnitude.
This assumption allows us to neglect inertial and damping forces due to negligibly small accelerations and velocities.
Here a static analysis on two models of plate with holes is performed for a force of 1000N on one end of the plate and the results for stress, strain and displacement are found.
4.MODEL:
the 2 plates are considered as 2 different cases
CASE 1
Dimensions of plate-
Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm
CASE 2
Dimensions of plate-
Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm
Two holes of 30 mm diameter which are placed 90mm away from the central hole on both sides.
5.PROCEDURE :
- Using Solidworks simulation create a new study.
- Apply the material as Alloy steel
- Using add fixtures option, one of the short sides of the plate is fixed and a force of 1000N is applied on the other side of the plate
- A mesh is applied on both the plate as per the properties shown below
- Then analysis for both the cases are made to run.
6.RESULTS :
CASE 1 results-
Stress-
Maximum stress is 1.296 N/mm^2
Strain-
Maximum strain is 4.879e-06
Displacement-
Maximum displacement is 0.00056767 mm
CASE 2 results-
Stress-
Maximum stress is 1.249 N/mm^2
Strain-
Maximum strain is 4.721e-06
Displacement-
Maximum displacement is 0.00058055 mm
7.CONCLUSION :
- The analysis of both the plates was successfully completed.
- The results show that the second model has a bit less stress than the first model. This is because stress is inversely proportional to the area, so when the area increases the stress decreases and because of more holes in case 2 the area was decreased.
- Case 2 shows higher displacement compartaively.
- Case 2 is the more efficient design since it has slightly less stress and strain values and has a lower material cost.
