Analysis of Buckling on Cyclonic Separator Stand.
Aim: Analysis of Buckling on a Cyclonic Separator Stand.
Introduction:Cyclone separators or simply cyclones are separation devices (dry scrubbers) that use the principle of inertia to remove particulate matter from flue gases. Cyclone separators is one of many air pollution control device known as precleaners since they generally remove larger pieces of particulate matter. This prevents finer filtration methods from having to deal with large, more abrasive particles later on. In addition, several cyclone separators can operate in parallel, and this system is known as a multicyclone.
Buckling Analysis:
In engineering, buckling is the sudden change in shape of a structural component under load such as the bowing of a column under compression or the wrinkling of a plate under shear. If a structure is subjected to a gradually increasing load, when the load reaches a critical level, a member may suddenly change shape and the structure and component is said to have buckled.
Buckling may occur even though the stresses that develop in the structure are well below those needed to cause failure in the material of which the structure is composed. Further loading may cause significant and somewhat unpredictable deformations, possibly leading to complete loss of the member's load-carrying capacity.
Theory: The purpose of this project was to perform buckling analysis on a Cyclonic Separator Stand using Solidworks. The analysis was done for two cases. In the first case the analysis was done for the Cyclonic separator stand without the stiffner. In this the weight and buckling factor of safety was observed.
In the second case, analysis was performed for the Cyclonic Separator stand with the metallic stiffener and again the weight and buckling factor of safety was observed.Further to optimize the position and thickness of the stiffener, multiple design study were performed which gave the best position value and the optimum dimension of stiffener with max buckling factor of safety and min weight.
Buckling Analysis: Case I: Analysis on Cyclonic Separator stand without stiffner. Unit system used is 'MMGS'.
1.Cyclonic Separator Stand without stiffner
2.Under new study buckling analysis is choosen and first the material is assigned. In this the material used is Alloy steel. Now fixtures are applied at the bottom legs.
3.After that load is applied on the upper face of the stand with the magnitude 150KN in the downward direction.
4.Now comes meshing the meshing is done fine in this case.
5.Finally run the analysis to see the results. In this the buckling factor of safety obtained is 9.36.
CASE II:Analysis of Cyclonic Separator Stand with Stiffner. The unit system used is 'MMGS'.
1.First the stiffner is present at the 1000mm distance from top surface of stand.
2.Now under new study buckling analysis is choosen and the material is assigned to it.The material choosen is Alloy Steel. Then fixtures are applied at the bottom of the legs.
3.After that load is applied at the top surface of the stand with the magnitude of 150KN in the downward direction.
4.Then meshing is done the mesh here is default.
5.Finally analysis is run and the results are obtained. The buckiling factor of safety obtained in this is 27.94.
6.Now to optimize the buckling factor of safety design study is done with the variation in distance of stiffner from the top surface of the stand.Design Study parameters are:
7.Basically what we want to do in this is to see the effect of variation of stiffner distance on buckling factor of safety .We have to maximize the buckling factor of safety. So at a particular distance from surface the value of buckling factor of safety is obtained and the best value is choosen.
As seen in the result the scenario 4 has satisfied the condition very well and buckling factor of safety 27.8333 is obtained.
Result: 1.In case I,Buckling Factor of safety 9.36 is obtained .
2.In case II,Buckling Factor of safety 27.94 is obatined and we have done optimization with design study. The scenario 4 has satisfied the condition with the buckling factor of safety 27.8333.
