Advanced Sheet Metal Design Using NX Cad Challenge_5_Odd Shaped Enclosure

Project Title: Advanced Sheet Metal Design Using NX Cad Challenge_5_Odd Shaped Enclosure.

Objective: To design and drafting the Odd Shaped Enclosure using given requirements, in SIEMENS NX Sheet Metal Application.

Introduction:

NX Sheet Metal: Creating fast, accurate flat patterns is the goal of any organization that manufactures products which contain sheet metal parts. NX Sheet Metal provides a set of tools within the NX design environment that allows for simple and fast design of sheet metal parts, dependent on their material and manufacturing process, the most common of which is straight brake sheet metal forming.

Sheet metal from solid: Convert to Sheet Metal is a valuable command when importing models from other CAD systems, neutral file formats, or something created in NX using traditional modelling techniques. The conversion allows the user to work with the model using downstream Sheet Metal features.

Extruded – an extruded body is obtained by sweeping an input section string along a vector, with specified start and end distance limits. The Extrude command creates this kind of body in NX.

Flanges: The flange command has been further enhanced to include a new length measurement method and an additional placement option.

Jogs: Lifts one side of the sheet metal part through a defined line. Ads flange between the stationary side and the lifted side.

To activate command:

  • Home => Bend Group => More Gallery => Bend Gallery => Jog
  • Menu => Insert => Bend => Jog

Using the “Jog” command:

Activate “Jog”

  • Select a line or create a sketch to draw a line. (“Select Curve” highlighted when the command starts)
  • Arrange height and direction.
  • To arrange height.
  • Type height value in the “Height” box in the command window.
  • Drag arrowhead on screen.
  • Click on the arrowhead. Then type a value in opening pop up.
  • To arrange direction:
  • Click the reverse box on the command window near the “Height” tab.
  • Double click on height arrow in the screen
  • Define a fixed side of the model by clicking the “Reverse Side” box in the “Jog Properties” tab.
  • If you want, You can change height dimensioning references by changing settings in “Height Reference”
  • To change the bending position due to line change “Inset” settings in the “Bend Properties” tab.
  • Click the middle mouse button or “Ok” to finish.

Bends: Bends sheet metal model by the reference of a line that lies on the sheet metal.

To activate command:

  • Home => Bend Group => More Gallery => Bend Gallery => Bend”
  • Menu => Insert => Bend => Bend”

Holes: This option lets us to create simple, counterboared, countersunk and taperedholes in solid bodies.

- Click on the icon in the Feature Toolbar as shown The Hole window will open.

- There are various selections that need to be done prior to making the holes.

- First you need to select the Type of the hole. Select the default General Hole Next, you need to define the points at which you need to make the holes.

- Click on the Sketch icon in the Position dialog box and choose the top face of the plate as the Sketch Plane.

- Click Ok

Unbend: Flattens the sheet model through selected bends.

To activate command:

  • Click on command on (When sheet metal application activated.) “ Home => Form down arrow => Unbend”
  • Activate command from “Menu => Insert => Form=> Unbend”

Rebend: Rebends, the unbent feature of the sheet metal model. It uses after the “Unbend” command If needed.

To activate command:

  • Click command on (When sheet metal application activated.) “ Home => Form Gallery => Rebend”
  • Activate command from “Menu => Insert => Form=> Rebend”

Design Methodology:

Description:

  1. NX Cad 12.0 software tool is opened and click new in the quick access tool bar.
  2. A new modal popup appears. Choose Sheet metal and save the part name as Odd Shaped Enclosure.
  3. Select the XY plane. And draw a sketch and extrude the part of 20mm distance.
  4. Use wrap the solid body with sheet metal feature to create the sheet metal of thickness 3mm.
  5. Add feature as flange to one edge of 20mm length and at angle of 90°.
  6. Create a jog on one surface of the sheet metal part as shown on the model.
  7. Unbend the part to add more features like dimple, holes, and beads.
  8. Create the Beads as shown in the instruction book and also create the holes of 10mm diameter.
  9. Rebend the unbend areas.
  10. Create the flat pattern by selecting one of the edge.
  11. Replace the view to see the FLAT PATTERN.
  12. End the Exercise.
