Objective: The objective of this project is to create a sheetmetal box assembly using the NX 11 software, to learn some standard techniques used commonly in sheetmetal design.
Introduction: Expanding on the knowledge gained during the previous project, this project emphasises more on the types of modelling methods using the previously used tools as well as newer tools. Some standard techiniques like hem creation are also used to show the actual features on a real sheetmetal body.
Designing Methodology:
Description:
First the tab thickness of 1 mm is specified in the part file. A rectangular tab of 200 mm X 150 mm is made. Two flanges of 200 mm each are made 90 degrees to the tab at the longer edges, with both extruded in the same direction. Two more flanges of 70 mm are made on the edges of the existing flanges, both 90 degrees and towards each other. Now the two flanges and the tab are joined using the closed corner feature. Then the last two flanges are joined at the centre using a series of smaller flange and hems in such a way that the faces interlock with each other. The entire component modelled so far is mirrored across the open side to create the basic box shape with an open top. A dimple is created on one of the faces of the box, and this feature is mirrored on the opposite face. Another dimple is created at the bottom face of the box. Four beads are also created on the bottom face to act as the base pads. The part is unbended and then rebended. Hems are created on the top edges of the box. The lid is created by first creating a datum plane 203 mm above the base face, and sketching the profile of the tab. Flanges are created on the lid to enclose the box below it. For creating the hinge, first a tab is created on one of the smaller faces of the box. An open loop hem is used to create the loop for the hinge, using bend radius and angle as input. Then the hem is unbended to create a normal cut out for another hem loop for the lid part of the hinge. The loop is rebended and mirrored on the other side of the interlocking hem made previously. The lid part of the hinge is also made in the same fashion, such that the loops from both the parts interlace with each other. The appearances are assigned in the end. This completes the modelling of the sheetmetal part.

Conclusion:
The box sheetmetal assembly is modelled within NX 11 Software. Features like the open loop hem was used to create looped sections of sheetmetal. Hems were created to show the realistic features used in sheetmetal applications to reduce sharpness of the edges. The closed corner feature is a very convenient tool when it comes to fixing or closing corners in a sheetmetal model.
