Project

Week 3 - Speed Programming in Matlab Octave for non computer science engineers

In this project we had to show a plot that compares the effect of number of moles on the stoichiometric co-efficient "ar" .The variation of 'ar' with number of Carbon atoms in alkanes, alkenes and alkynes were compared.

AIR FUEL RATIO is the ratio of masses of air and fuel particularly in an internal combustion engine.

STOICHIOMETRIC AIR FUEL RATIO is the ratio when the exact amount of air is present in the engine to burn the fuel present completely.

For Alkane, the combustion equation is,

CnH2n+2+ar(O2+3.76N2)=aCO2+bH2O+c(3.76N2)

and by balancing we ar = (3n+1)/2.

For Alkene, the combustion equation is,

CnH2n+ar(O2+3.76N2)=aCO2+bH2O+c(3.76N2)

And by balancing above equation, we get ar = 3n/2.

For Alkyne,the combustion equation is,

CnH2n+2+ar(O2+3.76N2)=aCO2+bH2O+c(3.76N2)

and by balancing we ar = (3n-1)/2.

MATLAB CODE :

clear allclose allclc% Combustion process for alkane%CnH2n+2+ar(O2+3.75N2)=aCo2+bH2O+cN2; %ar = stochiometric coefficient%n = number of moles of C n=1:20; ar_ALKANE =((3*n)+1)/2; %Combustion process for alkene% CnH2n+ar(O2+3.75N2)=aCo2+bH2O+cN2; %n=number of moles ar_ALKENE=1.5*n;% Combustion process for alkyne%CnH2n-2+ar(O2+3.75N2)=aCo2+bH2O+cN2;% n=number of molesar_ALKYNE= ((3*n)-1)/2;figure(1)plot(n,ar_ALKANE,'r');hold onplot (n,ar_ALKENE,'g');hold onplot(n,ar_ALKYNE,'b');xlabel('No. of Moles of Carbon')ylabel('Stochiometric Coefficient of ar_Carbon')legend('ar of ALKANE','ar of ALKENE', 'ar of ALKYNE')

Result - From the above graph in image , we can say that the stochiometric ratio varied linearly with carbon moles. Also, the Alkane fuels require more amount of air for complete combustion than either of the Alkene or Alkyne fuels with the same number of Carbon atoms.
