Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

1. The tensile test setup as described in the challenge was modelled. The following results were obtained for Case 1 and Case2.

The figure given below depicts the Equivalent Stress developed within the plate as per Case1. The maximum stress developed is 0.6059MPa. The stress values were compared for various element sizes 1mm, 2mm and 3mm. The given figure depicts the value obtained for 1mm element size.

The Figure given below provides the Equivalent Stress developed within the plate as per Case1. The maximum stress developed is 0.58244MPa. Again, in this case as welll the stress values were compared for various element sizes 1mm, 2mm and 3mm. The given figure depicts the value obtained for 1mm element size.

Comparing the two plots it is clearly evident that the maximum stress developed is lower in the case of Case 2.

The figure given below depicts the deformation plot for Case-1.

The figure given below depicts the deformation plot for Case-2.

The deformation though is more in the case -2 as compared to case -1. This is due to the fact that there are 2 extra holes provided in case 2.

2. From an Analysis stand point, Case -2 design would be selected. The reasons for the same are:

a. The maximum stress developed is lower in Case 2.

b. Case 2 has lesser material as two holes are drilled. Therefore Case -2 design is lighter.

c. The stress distribution is even in Case 2.

3. From a manufacturing stand point clearly Case -1 would be prefered as it requires less machining as compared case -2 which has two extra holes in the design as compared to case1.
