WELD JOINT ANALYSIS
A)TITLE:- Verification of weld joint with different materials.
B)OBJECTIVE :- To analyse the weld joint on the basis of directional deformation , equivalent strain and equivalent stress with changing the weld material.
C)MODELING :- the set up is shown in te fig below. the two ribs are welded on the large plate with circular hole at centre and a small plate with rectangular hole is welded at the bottom of the ribs.
D)ANALYSIS SETTINGS:-
1)The model is first imporeted into Ansys 2019 V3 static structrural module.
2)As the simulation is carried out in Acadamic version there is limitation of element and node nos. hence meshing is done with element size of 7 mm.
3)The fricational contact has been set between large plate-rib-1 , large plate-rib-2 , rib-1-small plate , rib-2-small plate and small plate-large plate with friction coefficient of 0.2.
4)the holes in the large plate are fixed and a load of 15000 N is applied at the center of small plate.
5) The analysis is carried out for three different materials of weld as - stainless steel , Aluminium alloy and Cast Bronze. the properties of these materilas are shown below.
- Structrural steel
- Al alloy , hig strength , wrought
- Bronze , cast
E) RESULTS :-
Case -1) All parts material-stainless steel
case -2) weld material- Al alloy , plates and ribs- steel
case -3) weld material-cast bronze , plates - steel , ribs-copper
the case wise results are tabulated below:-
F) DISCUSSION :-
i) The equivalenrt stress in welds is maximum in steel weld (case-1 ,295.54 MPa) while for Aluminium alloy it is lowest (case-2 , 244.67 MPa). in all cases it is found that the weld joints at the bottom of ribs and small plate experience the maximum stress.
ii) The maximum equivalent elastic strain value seems to be lowest ( 0.0018) for stainless steel( case-1 ) and for AL ( case-2)and bronze (case-3) it is almost similar. ( 0.003318).
iii) The directional deformation along Y-axis is maximum for plates wit bronze weld ( case-3 , 0.381 mm) while for plates with steel weld (case-1) and plates with Al weld (case-2) have almost same deformation (0.352 mm).
