Project

Verification of the weld joints for different materials

Aim:-Verify the joints for different materials.

Objective:-

Case 1. Stainless Steel:Using Stainless steel for both weldments and plates.

Case 2. Aluminium Alloy:The material to be used for this case is Aluminium alloy(high strength, wrought).

Case 3.Bronze: In order to simulate \"Brazing\", Using bronze as the weld material. And Stainless Steel to both plates and Copper to the \"Ribs\".

Geometry:-

Contact:-

There are two types of contact

First one is bonded between the plate and welding .

Second one is frictional between both plates

Mesh

Applied body sizing of 7mm.

Mesh matrix:

Analysis settings

1)Fixed support :-

All holes in big plate is fixed.

2)Force:

Applied force is of 15000N.

Case 1:- Stainless steel for both weldments and plates.

Conclusion:-

Directional deformation Equivalent strain Equivalent stress
Max Min Max Min Max Min
Case 1 0.35591 mm -3.0103e-002 mm 1.8739e-003 mm/mm 3.9881e-007 mm/mm 294.3 MPa 1.3418 MPa
Case 2 0.45261 mm -2.0586e-002 mm 3.4545e-003 mm/mm 5.1441e-007 mm/mm 254.42 MPa 1.4462 MPa
Case 3 0.41084 mm -2.3653e-002 mm 3.2046e-003 mm/mm 4.6165e-007 mm/mm 255.97 MPa 1.2448 MPa

Directonal Deformation:-Case2>Case3>Case1

Equivalent Strain:-Case2>Case3>Case1

Equivalent Stress:-Case1>Case3>Case2

  • Directional deformation in Aluminium Alloy are higher compare to other materials.
  • Equivalent stress distribution in weld joints using Stainless Steel is higher compared to other materials,so it can bear more loads than other two materials.
  • Equivalent strain in stainless steel is very lower compared to bronze and aluminim, where aluminium have the highest results values and bronze have moderate values.

From all the observations and results i found that max stress will at the weld joints where the load is applied i.e at the joint of small plates and ribs, it is observed as same in all three cases.
