Verification of Welds
OBJECTIVE- To perform structural analysis of weld joints for three different case setups and compare the directional deformation, equivalent stress and equivalent strain.
CASE 1- Stainless Steel: The material of the plates and welds is taken as Stainless Steel.
CASE 2 -Aluminium Alloy
CASE 3 -Bronze
PROCEDURE
Geometry Setup : Update the model to Workbench.
-Update the Name of plates and ribs
Contacts- Under the connections create contact between weld and plates, parallely create another contact between big plate, small plate and ribs.
Mesh- Mesh the big and small plates with mesh size of 7mm.
Support - All the Holes are fixed
Load- A load of 15000N is applied at central hole vertically downwards.
RESULTS:
CASE1 - STAINLESS STEEL
EQUIVALENT STRESS - 272.46 MPA
DIRECTIONAL DEFORMATION (Y)- 0.275 MM
EQUIVALENT STRAIN -0.00149
EQUIVALENT WELD STRESS-
CASE 2 - ALUMINIUM ALLOY
EQUIVALENT STRESS- 276.33 MPA
DIRECTIONAL DEFORMATION (Y) -0.2797 MM
EQUIVALENT STRAIN -0.00292
EQUIVALNET STRESS IN WELD -
CASE3- BRONZE
EQUIVALENT STRESS- 280.42 MPA
DIRECTIONAL DEFORMATION -0.308 MM
EQUIVALENT STRAIN-
EQUIVALENT STRESS IN WELD-
COMPARISON-
- Since Strain is inversely proportional to Youngs Modulus, here aluminium having lowest youngs modulus have highest strain.
- Yield Strength is stress at which material starts to deform, thus Yield Strength of Stainless Steel being higher than other materials, it has highest equivalent stress in welds at 253.38 MPa.
