Project

Verification of Weld Joints

Case 1 . Stainless Steel: In this case, the material of the plates must also be the same. Use Stainless steel for both weldments and plates. No need to add flux to the weldments.

The Weld Joint Model was first imported to ansys, checked if there is any problem in geometry while importing. after confirming model import was successful then material was set to Stainless Steel for whole geomerty.

Connections Settings :

The contacts as detected by ansys were changed to rename by its definition and for weld joint by default (Contact type - Bonded ) settings are used.

For Ribs and Small,Big Plate Contact type set to frictional o value 0.1

Weld Contact :

For Ribs and Small,Big Plate

For All 5 Figures setting were same.

Mesh Setting :

The mesh Body sizing is of 10mm given to Whole System.

The mesh Body sizing is of 7mm given to Big Plate and Small plate.

Generated Meshing :

Making Sure that statistics are within problem limits of Ansys student version.

Analysis Settings :

Fixed Support : Fixed Support are set Big plate by selecting 5 internal Circular face.

Force : 15000N force applied on rectangular slot in small plate in Y - Direction.

Case 2 : Aluminium Alloy: The material to be chosen for this case is Aluminium alloy(high strength, wrought). [Plate material to be used is stainless steel]

As per Instructions plate material to be used is stainless steel and remaining ribs & weld joints are assigned to be Aluminium Alloy.

Case 3 : Bronze: In order to simulate \"Brazing\", you should be using bronze as the weld material. Assign Stainless Steel to both plates and Copper to the \"Ribs\".

As per Instructions plate material to be used is stainless steel and Copper assigned to ribs & bronze to weld joints.

Note :

All step after assigning material for these cases are same.

Running the simulation and getting proper results

Simulation Result :

Directional Deformation - Case 1

Equivalent Elastic Strain experienced by the setup - Case 1

Equivalent Stress in Weld Joint : Case 1

Equivalent Stress in Whole Body : Case 1

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Directional Deformation - Case 2

Equivalent Elastic Strain experienced by the setup - Case 2

Equivalent Stress in Weld Joint : Case 2

Equivalent Stress in Whole Body : Case 2

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Directional Deformation - Case 3

Equivalent Elastic Strain experienced by the setup - Case 3

Equivalent Stress in Weld Joint : Case 3

Equivalent Stress in Whole Body : Case 3

Result :

Case 1 - Stainless Steel

Case 2 - Aluminium Alloy, Stainless Steel

Case 3 - Bronze, Copper, Stainless Steel

Conclusion :

1. The Maximum Deformation takes place in case 3 where, the Ribs are assign Copper & Welds as Bronze. Here due to Low Yield Strength of Bronze & Copper they deform most than other material & more rapidly. 2. The Minimum Deformation takes place in case 1 where whole body material is assigned to stainless steel. 3. The Maximum amount of Equivalent stress has been generated while simulating Brazing. It also appears due to high values of Yield Strength. 4. The highest amount of Equivalent stress generated on Weld joints are those for which Stainless steel was assigned as a whole working material model.
5. Also the second most amount of stress is developed by case 2, where the force is acting undergoes maximum stress. All these appears due to High Yield Strength of Stainless Steel.
