Understanding GT Power
1. Explore the GUI of GT SUITE and list down modules available with a brief description. (15 marks)
The different modules available in GT Suite are
1) GT-ISE
This is the interface of GT that is used to build models and simulate. It allows the user to build the required model and set the settings of the model.
It helps to create the model step by step and control the settings of each individual components like the pipe, cylinder, combustion, valve train, cooler, etc.
2) GEM3D
GEM3D is the module that allows the import of 3D models and then creates 1D models for processing in GT-SUITE.
For example, one can import a 3d model from any CAD software and GEM3D helps to create a 1D model of the 3D model to be used in GT-SUITE
3) GT-POST
This module is used to view and manipulate the results after the simulation is run.
It allows viewing selected plots, combining data of different cases, viewing the animation of the results, etc.
4) VTDESIGN
Short for valve train design. This module is used to design valve train and cam profiles
5) GT-SPACECLAIM
GT-SPACECLAIM is used for creating, editing, importing 3D models. It is basically a CAD tool for working with 3D objects and also interfacing it with GT-SUITE for carrying out simulations.
6) Optimization
GT-SUITE has a built-in module for optimization. This helps to optimize the model according to the user input by tweaking the settings of the model.
2. Locate the following settings:
Time Control Flag
The time control flag gives the following 2 options:
1) periodic
2) continuous
The periodic setting is useful when cyclic events are involved (e.g engine combustion cycle)
The continuous setting is useful when no periodic events are involved (e.g air flow through intercooler)
Time step and solution control
This has the following 3 main options:
1) FlowControlExplicit
Used when tracking high-frequency wave dynamics is important
2) FlowControlImplicit
Used for simulations where wave dynamics are not important
3) FlowControlQS
Used for fast running chemical kinetic applications
Integrator/Solver type
This allows selecting the type of solver for the ODE. There are different solvers available, the best need to be selected for the particular application.
3. Explore intercooler tutorial and note down all settings of:
Run setup
The run setup contains the following tabs
1) Time Control
This tab gives the option to control the time duration settings and other options to control the duration settings of the simulation.
2) Initialization
This tab allows to setup the initial conditions of the simulation
3) FlowControl
This tab is used defining the flow within the model and specify solver settings related to modeling of flow.
4) ODEControl
This tab is used to define solver settings for solving the ODEs of the model.
5) SignalControl
This tab can be used to define independent Control in the model and to specify solver settings related to modeling.
6) ThermalControl
This tab controls the settings of the thermal behavior at the wall only, it does not control the thermal behavior of the fluid.
7) ConvergenceRLT
This tab is used when steady-state of different criteria have different convergence times. It checks for the steady-state of different criteria and according to the input solves until the required steady-state for each criterion is achieved.
Advanced setup
This setup has advanced options for running and post-processing of the simulation
The Advanced setup contains the following tabs
1) General
2) Flow
2) Mechanics
3) Restart
4) VersionChanges
5) Paths
6) MiscFiles
Plot setup
This setup gives the options to change how the plots appear for the selected plots.
For this to work user has to first select the plots he requires to be shown after running the simulation.
Output setup
This setup has the following tabs
1) Data_storage
It deals with controlling the results to be suppressed. These options can be used to suppress certain unrequired results.
2) General
3) GT-POST_Setup
4) Flow
5) ODE-Mech
6) ScoreboardRLTs
7) UserScoreboardRLTs
8) EndOfRunTables
4. Problem:
The required input parameters are set as follows:
The diameter of cooler inlet and outlet pipe= 50 mm
Length of the CAC= 1000 mm
Inlet mass flow rate = 1200 kg/ h at 100 degC
Outlet pressure 2 bar at 30 deg C
Results:
Total heat transfer at Charge air cooler (CAC)
Ans= -3.3487449 kJ or -3349 J
Pressure drop across CAC
Ans = 7.09 x10^6 bar or 0.70950323 Pa
