Project

Transient structural analysis on a universal joint

Aim:- To perform a transient structural analysis on a universal joint

Objectives:- Perform a transient structural analysis on a double universal joint with a spring using three different materials:

  1. Structural Steel
  2. Stainless Steel
  3. Titanium alloy

Pre-Processing:-

Geometry:-

Connection:-

There are no contacts in this simulation because we just want just transfer of motion from one part to another part.

Joints:-

This simulation requires several joints ,Because of various components.

Meshing:-

Mesh:-

Mesh Matrics:-

Analysis Settings:-

The simulation is done in 5 steps with large deflection turned on .

Joint load:-

Joint load is applied on initial part of the mechanism load is revolute type and and part is turned upto 150 degrees.

Solver Output:-

Case1:- Structural Steel is spring Material

Equivalent Stress:-

Case2:-Stainless Steel is spring Material

Equivalent Stress:-

Case3:-Titanium Alloy is spring Material

Equivalent Stress:-

Animation:-

<iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/0v3RVXUUUWM\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Total deformation:-

Animation:-

Result and comparision:-

Cases Equivalent stress Total deformation
MAX MIN MAX MIN
Structural steel 1382.4 MPa 4.7805e-007 MPa 38.637 mm 0. mm
Stainless Steel 1339.4 MPa 4.2128e-007 MPa 38.637 mm 0. mm
Titanium alloy 680.37 MPa 1.3728e-007 MPa 38.637 mm 0. mm

As we seen the results the Titanium alloy has the least stress and Structural Steel has maximum stress its due to their materials Properties the Titanium alloy has the highest Young\'s Modulus and Structural steel has the least Young\'s Modulus and Titanium alloy weights half the amount of Structural Steel and Stainless Steel . So Titanium alloy is prefered as per the design aspect but there arent cost efficient like Steel and Stainless Steel .So as per the cost effectiveness is conserned the Stainless steel is perfered.
