Transient simulation of flow over a throttle body
1. Transient flow simulation of fluid over a throttle body is carried out using transient solver. No hydrodynamic mode can be used to check whether the mesh generation process is taking place correctly
2. Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes method is used to solve the compressible fluid flow inside the bent pipe and RNG-K epsilon turbulence model is chosen
3. Fixed embedding option is enabled in the grid controls, to obtain results with high resolution at required regions
4. 0.5 Bar pressure drives the flow and Air is chosen as the medium of flow
5. In the boundary condition rotating motion is provided for the throttle and the following conditions are choen as per the challenge instructions
- From 0 to 2 ms the valve should rotate by 25 degrees.
- From 2 to 4ms it should stay at 25 degrees.
- After which by 8ms the valve should get back to it’s original position
6. OutersSurface consist of both triangulated information and grid informaion, which results in wierd visuals and so cell data is hidden from the multi-block Inspector. Lets take a close look at the surface
7. Direction of the flow field is shown below using Vectors
8. Maginified view of the embedding is shown below. As a part of this challenge we are experiencing the change in the position of the throttle, so that the ability of CONVERGE Studio to regenerate the mesh grid for every time step becomes so useful.
Note: The time represented in the following images refers to milliseconds
9. The flow gets split when it is interrupted by the rotating throttle and the throttle experiences pressure distribution due to the flow. Following images use vectors to represent the flow field direction and magnitude of the velocity. Pressure distribution over the throttle is also represented using appropriate colour map.
Note: The time represented in the following images refers to milliseconds
10. Representing the flow field with Streamlines. Note: The time represented in the following images refers to milliseconds
11. Mass flow rate plots are shown below. Other such graphs can also be generated using CONVERGE Studio in a similar manner. As the flow is not much complex, there is no interesting things to look at.
As the throttle is experiencing rotation till 8 ms, the mass flow rate plot gradually tends to attain steady state only after 8 ms.
