Transient Analysis on a Piston and Cam mechanism

Aim:- To Perform a Transient Analysis on a Piston and Cam mechanism

Objective:- To run the analysis with

  1. Frictionless contact
  2. Frictional contact with 0.1 friction coefficient
  3. Frictional contact with 0.2 friction coefficient

Pre-processing:-

Barrel And cam both are rigid body so those will be considered as point load and no mesh will be generated in the system thats why there will be no effect of force so computation will also be less.

Geometry:-

Connection:-

Both the contact and joints are defined

Contact:-

In contact there is 3 cases as per the objectives

  1. Frictionless contact
  2. Frictional contact with 0.1 friction coefficient
  3. Frictional contact with 0.2 friction coefficient

Joints:-

  1. Fixed - Ground To barrel
  2. Revolute - Ground To BARREL_CAM
  3. Translational - barrel To CAM_FOLLOWER

Meshing:-

  • Face sizing of 3mm is used
  • Mesh:-
  • Mesh Matrics:-

Analysis Settings:-

The Analysis is Transient type.

Equivalent Elastic Strain:-Animation:-<iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/OA7MDb26Bak\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Comparision and Discussion:-

Cases Frictionless Friction 0.1 Friction 0.2
Equivalent Stress (Mpa) MAX 1341.8 1446 1755.5 MPa
MIN 8.85E-02 8.84E-02 8.84E-02
Directional Deformation (mm) MAX 10.903 10.936 11.035
MIN 10.189 -3.52E-10 -1.06E-10
Equivalent Elastic Strain (mm/mm) MAX 6.76E-03 7.27E-03 8.82E-03
MIN 7.02E-06 7.01E-06 7.00E-06

Maximum directional deformation of the frictionless contact 10.903mm and stress is 1341.8 MPa. After that apply the friction contact and it range is 0.1 its directional deformation (10.936) is increased compared to frictionless contact and equivalent stress ( 1446) also increased compared to the frictionless contact.

Apply the Friction is 0.2 It\'s maximum directional deformation (11.035) is maximum value compared to the frictionless contact and Friction 0.1 contacts. Its maximum stress also maximum than other two contacts.

Because, Friction is the force exerted by the surface of an object when another object moves against it. Friction occurs in the direction opposite to motion, and because of this, it is a force that affects the motion of objects. When you go down a slide, friction works opposite to your downward movement this is the reson behind the difference between 3 cases.
