Project

To perform Batch-meshing in Hypermesh(Benefits & Drawbacks)

Objective: To perform Batch-meshing on the components of provided models with the given criteria and assign the non-linear material property Steel to them.

Procedure:

  1. First selected the working profile as Radioss.

  1. Imported the model file using the Import Geometry option under the Import.

Model1(Hood)

Model 2(Fender)

  1. Switched to topo mode to check for solids.

Model1(Hood)

Model 2(Fender)

  1. Deleted the solids using the Delete >Solids to work on the surface.

Model1(Hood)

Model 2(Fender)

  1. To use Batch meshing on the various component of the models.

First created the parameters and criteria files.

Criteria file

Parameters file

Model1(Hood)

Component 1(Inner Body)

  • Enabled the component to work on it.
  • Then used the batchmesh/QI optimize option under the automesh command in the 2D panel. Here also uploaded the parameters file and criteria file to perform meshing as per the set criteria’s.
  • After few minutes a meshed mid surface component is generated.
  • Now checked for the quality criteria if there are any element failing for it using the quality index option under the 2D panel.
  • Used smooth over the meshed component to rectify failing elements.

Component 2(Outer Body)

  • Enabled the component to work on it.
  • Then used the batchmesh/QI optimize option under the automesh command in the 2D panel. Here also uploaded the parameters file and criteria file to perform meshing as per the set criteria’s.
  • After few minutes a meshed mid surface component is generated.
  • Now checked for the quality criteria if there are any element failing for it using the quality index option under the 2D panel. As there are none except for element at fillet area failing for min.length.

Failing elements

Component 3(Hinges)

  • Enabled the component to work on it.
  • Then used the batchmesh/QI optimize option under the automesh command in the 2D panel. Here also uploaded the parameters file and criteria file to perform meshing as per the set criteria’s.
  • After few minutes a meshed mid surface component is generated.
  • Now checked for the quality criteria if there are any element failing for it using the quality index option under the 2D panel.

Component 4(Latch)

  • Enabled the component to work on it.
  • Then used the batchmesh/QI optimize option under the automesh command in the 2D panel. Here also uploaded the parameters file and criteria file to perform meshing as per the set criteria’s.
  • After few minutes a meshed mid surface component is generated.
  • Now checked for the quality criteria if there are any element failing for it using the quality index option under the 2D panel.

Model 2(Fender)

The Model 2 contains only single component.

Component (Fender Body)

  • Enabled the component to work on it.

  • Then used the batchmesh/QI optimize option under the automesh command in the 2D panel. Here also uploaded the parameters file and criteria file to perform meshing as per the set criteria’s.
  • After few minutes a meshed mid surface component is generated.
  • Now checked for the quality criteria’s if there are any element failing for it using the quality index option under the 2D panel.
  • Then used various option under the cleanup tools in quality index to remove elements failing for the set criteria’s. Thus removing all the failing elements.
  1. To assign the non-linear material property Steel to created meshed mid surfaces. Here first created a material(steel) with non-linear property and assigned it to all the meshed components.

Below images are of meshed component with assigned property and material.

Model1(Hood)

Component 1(Inner Body)

  • By property

  • By material

Component 2(Outer Body)

  • By property

  • By material

Component 3(Hinges)

  • By property

  • By material

Component 4(Latch)

  • By property

  • By material

Model 2(Fender)

Component (Fender Body)

  • By property

  • By material

Result: Thus performed batch meshing over the various component of given models.

Model1(Hood)

Model 2(Fender)

Conclusion: From this challenge,

  • Learned to perform batch meshing in the Hypermesh.
  • Also learned to assign a non-linear material property to the various components.
  • Also learned the drawbacks of batch meshing that is, though it is time efficient, however there is a compromise on the quality of the resulting end product.
  • Also it may or may not give a proper result that is, a proper mid surface and proper meshing. Also it will make the job more cumbersome if needed to correct those errors created upon its use(to remove tria’s, mid surface correction).
  • Considering all the drawbacks it can only be used if it gives better result for the required job.
