TRANSIENT FLOW OVER A CYLINDER FOR DIFFERENT REYNOLDS NUMBER

Simulate the flow over a cylinder:

  • To calculate the baseline case reynolds no
  • Run baseline simulation and calcuate the reynolds no .Then increase the reynolds no by factor of 20%,40% and 100% then run the transient simulation.

STEPS:

  • Create a circle of radius 30 mm and extrude it to a length of 500 mm.
  • Select flow simulaton and click on wizard and select external flow type.
  • Select time dependent and select analysis time as 0.1s and output time setup as 0.01s
  • Next select air as fluid medium and give velocity in X-direction as 10 m/s as the air flows in X-axis.
  • Define the mesh automatically and and create a cutplot in the centre of the cylinder and select contour as velocity.
  • Create another cutplot in the same position and select contour as pressure.
  • Then run the simulation.
  • Insert animation and make animation for the flow.

  • Calculate the reynolds no for the given velocity using the reynolds number formula.
  • Then increase the reynolds no by the factor of 20%,40%and 100%,
  • For that reynolds number calculate the velocities and simulate the transient flow
  • Make animated videos for velocity and pressure in every conditions

Thus the transient flow over cylinders for different reynolds number has been simulated and animations were created for those conditions.By those animations we could find how the velocity changes at each and every location.
