TENSION AND TORSION TEST IN ANSYS WORKBENCH

Objective :

To perform the tension and torsion test on the specimen and find out the total deformation, equivalent stress and the temperature on the specimen.

TENSION TEST :

A tensile test, also known as a tension test, is one of the most fundamental and common types of mechanical testing. A tensile test applies tensile (pulling) force to a material and measures the specimen\'s response to the stress.

TORSION TEST :

Torsion testing involves the twisting of a sample along an axis and is a useful test for acquiring information like torsional shear stress, maximum torque, shear modulus, and breaking angle of a material or the interface between two materials.

EXPLICIT DYNAMICS :

The ANSYS explicit dynamics suite enables you to capture the physics of short-duration events for products that undergo highly nonlinear, transient dynamic forces.
CAD model
The material assigned for the specimen in both cases is steel 1006.

CASE-1 : TENSION TEST
SIMULATION SETUP :
Coordinate System :
The new coordinate systems are created at the both ends of the specimen.
MESHING :
The specimen is meshed with a method of tetrahedron. The end faces of the spaceimen are meshed with type of sphere of influence with the newly created coordinate systems.
The below figure shows the settings of the mesh.

Meshed Specimen
ANALYSIS SETTINGS :
The end time of the simulation is set as 1e-003 s in analysis settings.
BOUNDARY CONDITIONS :
  • Fixed support is assigned to the one side of the specimen.
  • Displacement is assigned to the other side of the specimen by displace of 18 mm.

SIMULATION RESULTS :

Total Deformation

Equivalent Stress

Temperature of the specimen

Conclusion :

As per the above results the max stress is 609.14 Mpa and the max deformation and temperature of the specimen are 18.003 and 267.44 respectively.

CASE-2 : TORSION TEST

SIMULATION SETUP :

COORDINATE SYSTEM :

The new coordinate systems are created at the both ends of the specimen and the cylindrical coordinate system is created at the middle of the specimen.

MESHING SETUP :

  • specimen is meshed with a method of tetrahedrons.
  • The cone shaped faces of the specimen are meshed with element size of 1.5mm.
  • The both ends of the specimen are meshed with the type of sphere of influence with a sphere radius of 22 mm and element size of 3 mm.
  • The centre of the specimen is meshed with the type of sphere of influence with a sphere radius of 8 mm and element size of 1 mm.

ANALYSIS SETTINGS :

The simulation is run with an end time of 1e-003 s.

BOUNDARY CONDITIONS :

  • The one end of the specimen is fixed.
  • Displacement is assigned to the specimen at the other end with 1200 degrees with reference to the newly created cylindrical coordinate system.

SIMULATION RESULTS :

Conclusion :

As per the above results the max stress is 631.61 Mpa and the max deformation and temperature of the specimen are 12.801 mm and 454.58 c respectively.
