Project

Sunseeker's Predator 74 YACHT

AIM & OBJECTIVE :

The objective is to design and assemble varioius parts using the solidworks.

INTRODUCTION :

  • The yatch assembly comprises part modelling as well as surface modelling.

  • The surface modelling environment is used upto 90% in the yacht assembly.

  • To model the sunseeker predator yacht by using the surface modelling features.

PARTS TO BE MODELLED :

  • Propeller

  • Radar

  • Hull

  • Garage Door

  • Rear seat

  • Front Seat

  • Middle Seat

  • Super Structure

  • Radar Mast

ABOUT FEATURE COMMANDS :

Features

Features are the individual shapes that, when combined, make up the part. You can also add some types of features to assemblies.
Features include multibody part capability. You can include separate extrude, revolve, loft, or sweep features, within the same part document.

Features Toolbar

The Features toolbar provides tools for creating model features. The set of features icons is very extensive so not all of them are included on the default Features toolbar.

Creating a Chamfer Feature

The chamfer tool creates a beveled feature on selected edges, faces, or a vertex.

Cuts

A cut is a feature that removes material from a part or an assembly.

Projected Curves
You can project a sketched curve onto a model face to create a 3D curve. You can also create a 3D curve that represents the intersection of two extruded surfaces generated by creating sketches on two intersecting planes.

Split Lines
The Split Line tool_Split_Line_Curves.gif tool projects an entity (sketch, solid, surface, face, plane, or surface spline) to surfaces, or curved or planar faces. It divides a selected face into multiple separate faces. You can split curves on multiple bodies with one command.

Creating Curves Through Reference Points
Creates a curve through points located on one or more planes.

Composite Curve
From a combination of curves, sketch geometry, and model edges.

Deforms
Use the deform feature to alter shapes of complex surface or solid models, either in a local area or globally, without concern for the sketches or feature constraints used to create the models.

Dome
Select one or more planar or non-planar faces,You can apply domes to faces whose centroid lies outside the face. This allows you to apply domes to irregularly shaped contours.

Elliptical dome
Specify an elliptical dome for cylindrical or conical models. An elliptical dome's shape is a half ellipsoid, with a height equal to one of the ellipsoid radii.

Extrudes
The Extrude PropertyManager defines the characteristics of extruded features.
You can also use Instant3D and RapidSketch to create extrudes.

Fillets
Fillet/Round creates a rounded internal or external face on the part. You can fillet all edges of a face, selected sets of faces, selected edges, or edge loops.

Library Features
A library feature is a frequently used feature, or combination of features, that you create once and then save in a library for future use. Most feature types are supported, some with certain limitations.

Lofts
Loft creates a feature by making transitions between profiles. A loft can be a base, boss, cut, or surface.

Patterns and Mirroring
Pattern repeats the selected features in an array based on a seed feature. You can create a linear pattern, a circular pattern, a curve driven pattern, a fill pattern, or use sketch points or table coordinates to create the pattern.

Revolves
Revolves add or remove material by revolving one or more profiles around a centerline. You can create revolved boss/bases, revolved cuts, or revolved surfaces. The revolve feature can be a solid, a thin feature, or a surface.

Shells
The shell tool hollows out a part, leaves open the faces you select, and creates thin-walled features on the remaining faces.

Surfaces
Surfaces are a type of geometry that can be used to create solid features. Surface tools are available on the Surfaces toolbar.

Sweeps
Sweep creates a base, boss, cut, or surface by moving a profile (section) along a path. A sweep can be simple or complex.

Appearance
To adjust the transparency level of an appearance, set Transparent Amount on the Illumination tab.

Offset
The offset command is used to create a similar sketch in some distance as required.

Trim
The trim command can be used to remove the extra portions in the sketch the trim command basically works basedon the some reference point, edge etc.

Dynamic mirror
This tool allows the user to mirror a sketch about a line while the user is creating their sketch.Depending on the design intent this toll can save an immense amount of time.

Shell
The shell command is used to create a thickened surface either it can be done in the interior or exterior surface.

Chamfer
The chamfer command creates a beveled feature on the selected edge, face and vertex etc.

Linear Pattern

The linear pattern is used to create a similar model either in linear xyz directions. The pattern is created based on the reference edge, face etc.

Circular Pattern
The Circular pattern is used to create a similar solid surface in a circular direction upto user defined instances.

Delete Face
This command is used to delete unnecessary faces and this feature comes with some options like delete face, delete and patch, delete and fill.

PROPELLER :

A propeller is a rotating fan like structure which is used to propel the ship by using the power generated and transmitted by hte main engine of the ship. The transmitted power is converted from rotational motion to generate a thrust which imparts momentum to the water,Resulting in a force that acts on the ship and pushes is forward.

COMMANDS USED IN PROPELLER

  • Revolve

  • Lofted Base

  • Cut Extrude

  • Fillet

RADAR :
A marine RADAR us a ranging and detedction system that picks up signals from objects several hundred feet or several miles away from your boat.the RADAR system sends out a signal in the form of a sound wave. This pulse is sent out from the RADAR dish on top of your boat.

HULL :
A hull is the watertight body of a ship or boat. The hull may open at the top (sunch as a dinghy),or it may be fully or partially covered with a deck.A top of the deck may be a deckhouse and other superstructure, such as a funnel, derrick or mast. The line where the hull meets the water surface is called the waterline.

SUPER STRUCTURE :

A super structure is an extended construction of any building or platform that rises above the rest of the building or platform in a distinct manner. Thus, superstructure means to add a construction to an already existing structure. In ships this is the name given to the part of the ship that emerges from the deck.

ASSEMBLY OF YACHT

  • All the modelled parts are inserted one by one in the assemnbly.

  • Since the parts are created based on the reference with the deck surface the parts are automatically fixed above the deck surface while the part being inserted in the assembly environment.

  • So to start the assembly of the yacht the first part being inserted will be the hull whicj has the deck surface.

  • The propeller,Radar and garage door are not fully fixed since they have to rotate and move respectively.

  • So for these parts the mates are manually defined to allow them to move in particular axis only.
