Sunseeker Predator Yacht
Objective:
- To do part as well as surface modelling of Yacht using Solid works.
- To assemble parts of Yacht under assembly environment.
- To create photorealistic rendering of the Yacht using Photo view 360.
Part Modelling
The 3D part is the basic building block of any large scale design. Features are the individual shapes that, when combined, make up the part. Part documents can contain multiple solid bodies that you can manipulate the same way as single solid bodies.
Surface Modelling
Surface modeling gives you the ability to build free form shapes using Solid works mechanical design software.
Parts of Yacht:
Following are the different parts of Yacht which are to be modeled in Solid works:
- Propeller
- Hull
- Radar Mast
- Radar
- Superstructure
- Front Seat
- Middle Seat
- Rear Seat
- Garage Door
Propeller
A propeller is a device with a rotating hub and rotating blades that are set at a pitch to form helical spiral, that when rotated performs an action. It transforms rotational power into linear thrust by acting upon a fluid such as water or air. The rotational motion of the blades is converted into thrust by creating a pressure difference between the two surfaces. A given mass is accelerated in one direction and the craft moves in the opposite direction.
Features Used
- Sketch is the 2D representation with respect to the plane /view. In Solid works different sketch options are available such as line, arc, circle, rectangle, spline
- Revolve add or remove material by revolving one or more profiles around centerline. You can create revolved boss/bases, revolved cuts or revolved surfaces. the revolved feature can be a solid, a thin feature or a surface.
- Lofted base creates a feature by making transition between two profiles. A loft can be a base, cut, boss or surface.
- Cut extrude this feature helps to remove material from the 3d model. Used to cut in both directions mainly used for creating holes, channels, slots.
- Fillet creates a rounded internal or external face on the part. You can fillet all edges of a face, selected sets of faces, selected edges or edge loops.
- Circular pattern This command allows you to create copies of object arranged in a circular pattern up to required instances.
Radar
Marine radars are X band or S band radar on ships used to detect other ships or land obstacles to provide bearing and distance for collision avoidance and navigation at sea.
Features Used
- Sketch
- Boss Extrude
- Fillet
- Cut Extrude
- Sketch pattern It is used to create replica of the feature body with reference to some sketch points.
- Mirror Mirroring is another way that Solid works can create a copy of an existing object. Additionally you must choose a plane to mirror parts. In most cases you need to create your own plane to have the mirror done the way you need.
- Split line This tool projects an entity (sketch, surface, solid, face, plane or surface spline) to surfaces, or curved or planar faces. It divides a selected face into multiple separate faces. You can split curves on multiple bodies with one command.
Hull
A hull is the watertight body of a ship or boat. The hull may open at the top or it may be fully or partially covered with a deck. A top the deck may be a deckhouse and other superstructures, such as a funnel, derrick, or mast. The line where the hull meets the water surface is called the waterline.
Features Used
- Sketch
- Project curve A projected curve is typically used either in sweeps and lofts as path or guide curve. They are made by using two sketches to a single curve or use a sketch to project on a surface.
- Loft surface created using multiple 3D curves by ensuring tangency between the selected curves.
- Fill surface It constructs a surface patch with any number of sides within a boundary defined by existing model edges sketches or curves including composite curves
- Surface extrude creates an extruded surface based on reference sketch.
- Surface trim entities select the trim entities based on the sketch you want to trim or extend.
- Surface extend extends the edge, multiple edge or face based on surface and extension type.
- Shell This tool hollows out a part leaves open the faces you select and creates thin walled features on the remaining faces.
- Boss Extrude
- Cut Extrude
- Fillet
- Chamfer used to create beveled features on selected edges, faces or a vertex.
- Sweep using this feature you can create a shape by moving 2D sketch profile along a 2Dor 3D sketch path.
- Plane
- Dome select one or more planar/non planar faces. Set a value for the distance by which the dome expands. Click to create a concave/convex dome
- Helix/Spiral this command creates a helix/spiral based on some reference sketch.
- Linear pattern repeats the selected feature in an array based on a seed feature. You can create a linear, circular, curve driven, a fill pattern or use sketch points or table coordinates to create the pattern
- Delete face used to delete unnecessary faces.
- Curve
- Revolve
- Combine used to combine two or more bodies.
Garage Door
A garage door is a large door on a garage that opens either manually or by an electric motor (a garage door opener). Garage doors are frequently large enough to accommodate automobiles and other vehicles. Doors are made of wood, metal or fiberglass and may be insulated to prevent heat loss.

Assembly of Yacht
- Assembly is done in the assembly environment by inserting all the modelled parts of Yacht using insert part option.
- Parts of the Yacht are fixed in assembly environment automatically above the deck surface as they are made in reference with it.
- Propeller, garage door and radar are to be fixed manually by giving required mate conditions.
Mates It creates geometric relationships between assembly components. As you add mates you define the allowable directions of linear or rotational motion of the components. You can move a component within its degree of freedom and can visualize the behavior of assembly.
Photorealistic rendering of Yacht
It is a process of creating a 3D model into a realistic image. The rendered image incorporates the appearances, lighting, scene and decals included with the model.
Rendering in Solid works can be done in two ways:
- Photo view 360
- Solid works visualize
Using Photo view 360 rendering of chopper is done with different views.
Conclusion
- All the parts of the Yacht are modeled and assembled using Solid works.
- Rendering of the Yacht was done using Photo view 360.
Learning Outcome
- Learned various tools for surface modelling.
