Project

Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

Objective:

Objective of this challage is static structural analysis on a plate with single hole and multiple holes.and also we need to select in automotive industry piont of view, which design is good for ananlysis and manufacturing and we need to give reason.

Case :1

Stress concentration of a plate with hole:

creation plate with holes :

  • Length:- 300mm.
  • Breadth:-120mm.
  • Thickness:-30mm.
  • Circular hole at centre diameter:-60mm

as per the above dimensions the plate with hole were created in spaceclaim geometry.

Boundary conditions

  • Left face fixed.
  • 500N force applied on right face.

Material

  • Structural steel.

Mesh :

Tetrahedral mesh is done with element size of 4mm.

Results :

Total deformation:

  • Min: 0 mm
  • Max: 0.00027484 mm

Equivalent stress :

  • Min: 0.010588 mpa
  • Max: 0.60941 mpa

Case :2

Stress concentration of a plate with three hole :

creation plate with holes :

  • Length:- 300mm.
  • Breadth:-120mm.
  • Thickness:-30mm.
  • Circular hole at centre diameter:-60mm.
  • Smaller holes 90mm away from centre.
  • Smaller hole diameter:-30mm

as per the above dimensions the plate with hole were created in spaceclaim geometry.

Boundary conditions

  • Left face fixed.
  • 500N force applied on right face.

Material

  • Structural steel.

Mesh :

Tetrahedral mesh is done with element size of 4mm.

Results for case 2:

Total deformation:

  • Min: 0 mm
  • Max: 0.00029712 mm

Equivalent stress :

  • Min: 0.0020605 mpa
  • Max: 0.58417 mpa

Conclusion:-

Both the geometries are of similar dimensions with only difference of no of holes.

  • By comparing both the deformation results I observed that deformation in plate with multiple holes is higher than plate with a hole.
  • By comparing both equivalent stress results the stress concentration in plate with single hole is higher than plate with multiple hole.
  • Observing stress results plate with multiple holes have uniform stress distribution than plate with single hole.
  • Observing total deformation plate with multiple holes has high deformation due to less material.

Analysis stand point

For analysis point of view I suggest plate with multiple holes.

The reason behind that is it has uniform stress distribution compared to plate with a hole,it will have more life.

Manufacturing stand point

For manufacturing stand point of view I suggest plate with single hole.

The reason behind that is it need less operations compared to plate with multiple hole,so it will reduce manufacturing time wastage of material.
