Project

Stoichiometric Combustion Calculator for Alkane, Alkene and Alkyne

REPORT:

AIM:

The aim of the project is to plot the comparison of effect of number of mole of carbon on the stiochiometric co-efficient "ar"using MATLAB.Also, observe this comparison wih respect to different fuel types(Alkane, alkene and alkyne).

EQUATION:

Where,

n = No.of moles of C

ar = Stoichiometric co-efficient

a = No.of moles of carbon di-oxide

b = No.of moles of water

c = No.of moles of Nitrogen

EXPLANATION:

ALKANE-ALKENE-ALKYNE:

Alkanes,Alkenes and Alkynes are simple hydrocarbon chains with no functional groups.Functional group means,Hydro carbon chain doesn't have bond with

alcohol,amine,amide,aldehyde,ester,etc.

WHY ALKANES PREFERRED OVER ALKENE AND ALKYNE AS FUEL?

Alkanes are preferred over alkene and alkyne as fuel because alkanes are saturated organic compounds being less reactive ,irrespective of combustion with air,While alkenes and alkynes are unsaturated organic compounds which are highly reactive.

BALANCING THE EQUATION:

ALKANES:

Performing elementwise balance in the equation

The combustion equation is given.To balance the equation lets consider.

  • N (Inert component) 3.76ar*2=2*c
  • C: n=a
  • H: 2*n+2=2*b=n+1
  • O: 2*ar=2*a+b

Therefore stoichiometric coefficient: ar =(3*n+1)/2

ALKENES:

The combustion equation is given.To balance the equation lets consider.

  • N (Inert component) 3.76ar*2=2*c
  • C: n=a
  • H: 2*n=2*b
  • O: 2*ar=2*a+b

Therefore stoichiometric coefficient:ar=3*n/2

ALKYNES:

The combustion equation is given.To balance the equation lets consider.

  • N(Inert component) 3.76ar*2=2*c
  • C: n=a
  • H: 2*n-2=2*b
  • O: 2*ar=2*a+b

Therefore stiochiometric coefficient ar=(3*n-1)/2

%FOR ALKENES
alkene=1.5*n
%for alkynes
alkyne=1.5*(n-0.5)

ylabel('stiochiometric coefficient')

OUTPUT:

RESULT:

A Graph is plotted clearly, showing stiochiometry coefficients of Alkane,Alkene and Alkyne.
