Steady state simulation of flow over a throttle body
Objective:
- To peform steady state simulation of a flow over a throttle body
- To obtain velocity and pressure contours and draw a colclusion looking at the plots.
Theory:
The throttle body is the part of the air intake system that controls the amount of air flowing into the engine, in response to driver accelerator pedal input in the main. The throttle body is usually located between the air filter box and the intake manifold, and it is usually attached to, or near, the mass airflow sensor. Often, an engine coolant line also runs through it in order for the engine to draw intake air at a certain temperature (the engine\'s current coolant temperature, which the ECU senses through the relevant sensor) and therefore with a known density.
Note: A steady state simulation was perfomed to obtain values of flow at wide open throttle.
Geometry :
Throttle was kept at wide open position.
Meshing:
Grid size : 0.004
As there\'s a considerable gap around the throttle and to capture the flow efficiently in that area ,
fixed embedding around the throttle of 1mm was assigned.
Results:
velocity contour:
As we can see velocity increases where there is restriction to the flow and behind the restriction it is minimal
pressure:
pressure is high where there is restriction in the direction of flow
PLOTS:
Total cell counts:around 11k
Avg outlet velocity was found to be around 190 m/s
Mass flow rate at inlet and outlet is compared which is almost same at wide open throttle condition.
