Project

Steady state simulation of flow over a throttle body

Objective:

The purpose of this project is to simulate the flow over a throttle body using Converge Studio. In this case the throttle is open that is it doesnt move.Plotting the pressure, velocity , mass flow rate and total cell count.

Geometry:

The elbow geometry having throttle body was imported. It was scaled to meter, assigned mesh sizes and boundary conditions were flagged.

Mesh:

Mesh around the throttle:

Case setup:

Iinitially the geometry is imported and then boundary flagging is performed. Pressure based steady solver is used with mesh grid size of 2 mm using fixed embedding over the throttle. For turbulence model RNG k- eps is chosen.

Velocity Contour :

The below image shows the velocity contour which is cut along z axis and it is having the maximum velocity of 310 m/s at side walls of throttle valve.

Velocity Glyph:

The above plot shows the velocity vector

Pressure Contour:

The below is the pressure contour with maximum pressure at inlet of 1.5 bar. Below image is the cut section of geometry exposed to pressure using paraview. The pressure is minimum at surface between the elbow pipe wall and the throttle valve and the minimum pressure is 0.71 bar. The throttle here acts like a block to the flow so we can observe the difference in pressure above and below the throttle valve.

Velocity plot:

Above plot shows the velocity at both inlet and outlet. From the image we can observe that the inlet reached steady state at around 4000 cycles and the outlet reached steady state at around 5500 cycles. Initially there is some dip this is because of interaction with the throttle and as the flow progress the velocity becomes steady.

Pressure Plot:

The above image shows the plot of pressure at inlet and outlet. From the image we can observe that total pressure at outlet increases along the cycle and the static pressure at inlet decreases along the increase of cycles. Both total pressure at inlet and static pressure at outlet remains constant.

Total Cell Count:

The above images shows the total number of cells and the value is around 16000 cells.

Mass Flow Rate:

The above plot shows the mass flow rate at inlet and outlet. Mass flow rate follows the law of conservation where the mass entering at the inet and exiting at the outlet remains same over the entire cycle.
