Project

Steady state simulation of flow over a throttle body

OBJECTIVE:-

To Analyse the Steady state simulation of flow over a throttle body using CONVERGE STUDIO as Solver and Paraview for Post processing (3D Simulation).

PROCEDURE:-

  1. CONVERGE STUDIO Geomentry
  • Open CONVERGE STUDIO.
  • Start New file.
  • Open Elbow.stl file.

The Picture shows the elbow inclined inappropriate axis by using ROTATE tab in TRANSFORM.

  • Rotate the geomentry in XZ-Plane.
  • Change Scale Factor 1.0 to 0.001.
  • Check all Normals are pointing to Fluid Domain(In Diagnosis Tab).

  1. CONVERGE STUDIO Case Setup

The Picture shows case setup for the Throttle in an Steady State.

In Run Parameter setup solver as Pressure Based Steady State.

Then Boundary Conditions

This picture illustrates about setting up an boundary such as Inlet, Outlet, Wall.

  • In Inlet Total pressure as 1.5 Bar.
  • In Outlet Static pressure as 1.0 Bar.
  • In Wall motion Kept as stationary.

Base Grid

In base grid tab setting up grid size as X = 0.004, Y = 0.004, Z = 0.004.

Fixed Embedding

Making Fine or Coarse Mesh at an Boundary which in produces better results in post processing.

At the Throttle Section Embedding taken place of size 0.002 for 2 layer.

After settingup the case Save the file in .cvg format.

  1. Cygwin
  • Go to the directory in which the input files are located.
  • Using cygwin run exe executable.
  • The output file were created in an folder after the executable runs in 15000 cycles.

  1. Post Processing in Paraview
  • Before simulating in paraview convert the output files for simulating in paraview using post_convert (or) in CONVERGE STUDIO.
  • Save the converted files in an folder as test.
  • Open Paraview and open test.vtm file.
  • Analyse the simulations.

Pressure Contour

  • The static pressure (1.0Bar) maintained at Outlet because the throttle hold the pressure.
  • Total pressure (1.5bar) created at Inlet and flows towards the throttle as shown plot.
  • The pressure drop created at the throttle right side where the area is slightly higher compared to throttle left side.
  • On left side the pressure becomes higher as shown in plot.

Velocity Contour

  • The velocity is increased at the throttle right side where the pressure decreases.

Mass Flow Rate

Total Cell Count

  • The above plot illustrates cell count of four processor.
  • Rank 0 = 1052 cells.
  • Rank 1 = 1014 cells.
  • Rank 2 = 1031 cells.
  • Rank 3 = 1013 cells.

Conclusion

  • The steady flow of throttle body is analysed and learned about how the throttle reacts when the pressure, velocity, temperature is varied in different time interval (or) time cycles.
