Static Structural Analysis on a Railwheel and Track

Aim:-Perform a static structural analysis on a Railwheel and Track setup.

Objectives:-

Case 1: Multiply the bearing load by 5 times and compare the results with the load of 100000 N (As done in week 2 video). Compare the Total Deformation, Equivalent stress and the life under both the loads

Case 2: Implement a User defined result and calculate the Total Deformation from this result and check if it is the same as that obtained by the inbuilt result by ANSYS for a load of 100000 N.

Solution:-

Geometry:-

Material Properties:-

Connections:-In connection we define contacts and joints

contacts:-

1] Frictional - wheel\\Solid1 To runningrail\\Solid1

coefficient of friction is 0.3

2] Frictionless - Part2\\Solid1 To wheel\\Solid1

Joints:-

1] Translational - Ground To Part2\\Solid1

2] Fixed - Ground To runningrail\\Solid1

3] Planar - Ground To wheel\\Solid1

Mesh Sizing:-

Mesh Matrix:-

Anslysis settings:-

Case 1:-To compaer the results under two different loading conditions.

Bearing load:-

Loading Condition 1:- Load= 100000N

Loading Condition 2:- Load= 500000N

The diaplacement for both the condition is Same 500mm with the step of 100mm for each step

Total Deformation:-

Loading Condition 1:- Load= 100000N

Animation:-https://youtu.be/VdPEOiRNzD8

Loading Condition 2:- Load= 500000N

Animation:-https://youtu.be/PjoR2xuRlmU

Equivalent stress:-

Loading Condition 1:- Load= 100000N

Animation:-https://youtu.be/JVKS_3wfNeI

Loading Condition 2:- Load= 500000N

Animation:-https://youtu.be/ykjdoGjj5a0

Life under Loads:-

Loading Condition 1:- Load= 100000N

Loading Condition 2:- Load= 500000N

  • From the above results analysis we see that the deformation value at load of 100000N and 500000N both are same i.e., 1000.7mm which indicates that even at 5 times increase in bearing load the material can sustain without failure.
  • The equivalent stress value at a bearing load of 100000N is 94.102 MPa which is within the yield strength value of material i.e., 250Mpa and at a bearing load of 500000N is 365.01 MPa which is also within the ultimate strength value of material i.e., 460Mpa.
  • Since the deformation value for both the load cases is same and the equivalent stress value for both the load cases is within the permissible limits.
  • Thus there was a considerable decrease in in the total life which was due to the increase in the load.

Case 2: Implement a User defined result and calculate the Total Deformation from this result and check if it is the same as that obtained by the inbuilt result by ANSYS for a load of 100000 N.

USER DEFINED RESULT:-

  • Right click over the solution menu and insert user defined result

• Since Total deformation is the vector sum of all directional displacements of the systems enter the following expression (i.e., sqrt(Ux^2+Uy^2+Uz^2)in the expression row.

Results:-

From the above results we conclude that the total deformation calculated using user defined result is same as that obtained by the inbuilt result by ANSYS for a load of 100000 N.

CONCLUSION:

  • Static Structural Analysis on the Rail wheel and Track setup was completed successfully without any errors.
  • The values for maximum total deformation remains the same for both the loading conditions.
  • The stress value increased as expected. The value for maximum von mises stress increased from 94.102 MPa to 365.01 MPa.
  • The minimum life decreased from 6.0351E+5 cycles to 3585.7 cycles Whereas the maximum life remains the same.
  • The results obtained from the inbuild function is same as the results obtained from the user defined result for total deformation.
