Spur Gear Challenge
Objective:
To run analysis of a spur gear of 3 different material mated to eachother , compair the results and select which one would suite our purpose .
- Cast Iron(ductile)
- Cast Steel
- Cast Bronze
Material properties:
Bronze:
Cast steel:
Cast Iron(ductile)
Geometry:
Contacts:
Frictional contact & formulation set to normal lagrange .
Joints:
Joints are set to ground to body with the specified direction
Left gear was set o rotation on 6 steps and right gear was given the moment of 10000Nmm
Meshing:
Results:
Stress plot:
Cast Iron(ductile) Max stress 417.65Mpa
Cast Steel max stress was around 424mpa
Cast Bronze max stress was found to be around 462mpa
Deformation:
Cast Iron(ductile)
Cast Steel
Cast Bronze
Stress intensity plot:
Cast Iron(ductile)
Cast Steel
Cast Bronze
Conclusion:
Crack is mostlikely to occur at the root of the tooth.
Stress intensity is mainly used in fracture mechanism where ,the greater the intensity, greater the chance of occurrence of fracture.
so the stress intensity is maximum for cast steel so it is mostlikely to fail under same loading ,considering afordablity and availablity cast iron should be used but if machinablity is the concern bronze should be used as it is more ductile as compaired to castiron so greater depth of cut can be given while machining reducing machining time.
