Slider Crank Mechanism Stress & Modal Analysis using ANSYS Workbench
- Objectives: To analyse Slider Crank Mechanism for Stress & Modal Analysis
- Geometrical Design:
The model for Slider Crank Mechanism looks like this consists of various parts such as Member, Crank, Part 1 and Part 2.
- Material Properties:
For the whole analysis Structural Steel Material is used, this is how its mechanical properties look like;
- Problem Statement:
Slider Crank Mechanism is analysed for Transient Structural analysis, joint load applied to crank to obtain various results like Total Deformation, Equivalent Elastic Strain & Equivalent Stress, after obtaining stress results model is checked for modal analysis as well.
- Mesh Criterion:
Element Type: Automatic Meshing (Tet & Hex Mesh)
Element Size: 6 mm
Mesh:
Element Quality:
- Boundary Condition:
Assembly is applied with different kinds of joints, in 1st case Part is kept as Fixed, Crank and Member 1 applied with Revolute Joint in 2nd case, as in 3rd case 2 translations joints applied to Part 1 and 2 with Member 1.
Fixed Joint:
Revolute Joint:
Translational Joint:
- Loading and Analysis Setting:
Project carried out with 4 steps, while applying loadings, the crank is rotated to 900 , 1800, 2700 & 3600
Analysis Settings:
Loading Conditions:
- Post Processing:
Total Deformation:
Equivalent Elastic Strain:
Equivalent Stress:
Equivalent Stress for Crank:
Equivalent Stress for Part 2:

Post Process Results Summary;
- Results and Conclusion:
Slider Crank Mechanism is analysed using ANSYS and various results obtained from this project. Having max total deformation of 4.784 MM and max stress 0.01 Mpa. This stress is now taken into Modal Analysis to find various failure modes due to stress and vibration. We have considered 4 Modes of Vibration; there can be more modes as well in which model can fail.
