Shock Tube Simulation
For a Shock Tube Simulation, we have to import the shock tube geomertry which consist of a high pressure region, a low pressure region & a diaphragm separating these two regions. For a shock tube simulation to occur, the diaphragm separating the two regions breaks so that the fluid inside the tube travels from high pressure region to low pressure region.
After the geometry is imported, the case is setup for a transient flow across the pipe. The boundaries are flagged and are grouped by colour regions. In the initial conditions case, for the high pressure region, the pressure is set at 6 bar and similarly the low pressure region is set at 1 bar.
The \'Events\' tab is specifically selected for shock tube simulation so that it may connect or disconnect two regions whenever the need arises. Here the protocol is set in such a manner that at 0 seconds, the two regions are separate but at 0.001s the two regions stay open until transient flow occurs in the shock tube.
The above image shows the total cell count in terms of regions with respect to time.
The above image shows the cell count of high pressure region with respect to time.
The above image shows the cell count of low pressure region with respect to time.
At 0.001s, the diaphragm separates both the regions and there is no flow in these regions.
after 0.001s, the diaphragm breaks and transient shock tube simulation occurs.
At high pressure region the cell count decreases and comes to a particular value at 0.003s, while at low pressure region, the cell count increases and stops until at 0.003s.
When the diaphragm breaks, the fluid in the high pressure region travels to low pressure region creating pressure differences all across the pipe.
The temperature tends to increase when there is high pressure flow across the pipe.
The pressure and temperature changes are shown in the videos attached below.
