Section Modulus Calculation and Optimization - Hood
Section Modulus:
- Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams.
- There are two types of section modulus,
- Elastic section modulus.
- Plastic section modulus.
- To define section modulus, it may be defined as the ratio of total moment resisted by the section to the stress in the extreme fibre which is equal to yield stress.
Section Modulus:
S = I/y
S = Section Modulus
I = Moment of Inertia
Y = distance between the nuteral axis and the extreme end of the object.
Consider Stainless steel AISI 302 – cold-rolled – y = 520 MPa
- In short,higher the section modulus,higher the strength of the component.
- Here,the section modulus of the hood is calculated first.
- Further changes are made in the hood to increase the section modulus.
Existing module:
Now the distance between the panels is increased by 4mm.
Modified Section:
Interference:
- Here, by increasing the distance between the panels,the section modulus got increased by 0.560456705 mm^2.
- The Moment of Inertia (max) got increased by 0.107163043 e^6 mm^4.
- The Moment of Inertia (min) got increased by 0.281532614 e^4 mm^4.
- Thus by increasing the section modulus of the hood,its strength is increased.
- The distance between the hood is increased by 4mm.
