STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF SPHERE PRESSING ON A FLAT PLATE
PROJECT OBJECTIVE:
Structural analysis is being performed to capture the plastic deformation of a sphere pressing on a plate.
ABSTRACT:
The plate is made of structural steel non-linear and the sphere is made of structural steel. Mesh size of 4 mm is used in this project to capture the parameters effectively.
MATERIALS:
STRUCTURAL STEEL:
MODEL:
Since the sphere on the plate model is symmetric about a quater of its size, it is divided into 4 pieces to reduce the computational time and then the results is computed and is analyzed for all the four portions.
MESHING:
A mesh size of 4 mm on the plate is used in this simulation.
DEFINING THE CONTACTS:
The contact type is considered to be frictional with a friction coefficient of 0.74
JOINTS:
A fixed support is given to the plate so that it does not gets displaced during the application of force by the sphere.
The sphere is being forced down on the plate.
ANALYSIS SETTINGS:
The simulation is being solved in 4 steps.
SOLVER TYPE- DIRECT
LARGE DEFLECTION- ON
Rest Features are left PROGRAM CONTROLLED to let the solver decide the optimum values for those features.

CONCLUSION:
It is seen that permanent defomation has taken place as the plate is strained beyond elastic limits.
The maximum stress is seen to act on the area of contact between sphere and plate.
