RCH scrub

1. If the roll centre height increases, the body roll decreases assuming that the vertical distance between the roll centre and centre of gravity remains the same.

2.

  • When the roll centre is at the ground plane, the Roll Centre Height (RCH) becomes zero and the effect is as follows:
  1. The rolling moment increases compared to that when the roll centre was above the ground plane.
  2. Non rolling moment turns out to be zero as RCH=0
  • When the roll centre is below the ground plane, it has the following effects:
  1. Rolling moment increases by a greater amount compared to that when Roll Centre was on the ground plane.
  2. Non rolling moment exists and acts in opposite direction to that of rolling moment direction. So the rolling and non-rolling moments will counteract each other.

3. In a real vehicle, a Force Based Roll Centre (FBRC) as defined by SAE will be more accurate.

This is because in Force Based Roll Centre, the roll centre location is based on the resultant between lateral and vertical forces which will act at the tire-road interface.

But the Kinematic Roll Centre(KRC) depends on the position of instant centre which in turn changes with the position of the suspension links during supension travel in jounce and rebound.

Because of this, it becomes hard to determine the position Kinematic Roll Centre.
