Project Steady state simulation of flow over a throttle body
Elbow Channel Case Description:
- Elbow Channel consists of a throttle valve which lies inbetween the inlet and outlet.
- The throttle valve remains stationery and we are going to visualize the flow distribution near it.
- The normals are required to be pointed inside the elbow so that fluid is simulated inside the domain.
- We are using a general flow simulation and the other parameters for combustion, chemistry are not considered.
- The effects of thickness which is responsible for conjugate heat transfer are neglected for this case study.
- Since the flow is a steady state simulation where the valve is not going to move our end result is going to be a final flow field, pressure and mass flow rate.
Initial Conditions:
- O2 and N2 are the necessary fluids which are going to simulated for the elbow channel.
- A pressure difference of roughly 50000Pa is going to drive the flow between the inlet and outlet.
- The momentum and the k-\'epsilon\' equations are going to be our transport equations.
Plots and Discussions:-
Model Case:
- Boundary flagging is done to split the model into meaningful regions. This needs to be done to understand the geometry.
- The throttle needs to be near the bend inside the elbow channel.
Mesh(2mm):
- We are applying fixed embedding near the throttle area by making the mesh really fine so that some amount of fluid that flows near the throttle leaks through the passages and reaches the outlet surface.
- A few cells are required between the throttle valve and the elbow passage to pass through and reach the outlet.
- We are using cut cell cartesian method in Converge CFD and also on top of that additional mesh refinement is taking place automatically.
Pressure Contour with Pressure Plots:
- The flow hits the throttle at high pressure and behind the throttle there are low pressure regions. Low pressure indicates a drop in static pressure.
- The flow passes through the passages in the elbow which are not affected by the throttle valve and thats why the at some places the pressure regions remains at a low value.
Velocity Contour with Velocity Plots:
- The peak velocity is quite high in this simulation. The flow speed decreases as soon as it hits the throttle valve but since it doesn\'t fully cover all the passages it passes through at reasonable speeds and reaches the outlet at a higher velocity.
Mass Flow Rate:
- A maximum amount of 0.065 kg/s fluid enters and leaves the elbow channel.
Total Cell Count:
- For a base mesh size of 2mm, the average cell count is going to be 42000 cells which is required to capture the flow physics within the elbow channel.
