Project Steady state simulation of flow over a throttle body

STEADY STATE SIMULATION OVER A THROTTLE BODY.

OBJECTIVE:

Simulate Flow of fluid over a throttle body with completely open valve in converge studio and post process the results.

PROCESS:

  • A pre-made CAD design of a throttle body is imported into Converge Studio.
  • The design is checked for errors, by diagnosis and made sure that all open edges are patched and ready for an error free geometry.
  • The boundaries were flagged accordingly.
  • The case setup is carried out as below:

Boundary conditions :

Inlet pressure – 1.5 bar at 300k and outlet 1 bar at 300k. This pressure drop acts as the potential for flow.

Simulation is set to run for 15000 cycle with minimum time step as 1e-9 and max as 1.

Mesh size of 2e-4 was generated with fixed embedding near the throttle valve of factor 3 .

GEOMETRY VIEW IN PARAVIEW

GEOMETRY MESH WITH EMBEDDING NEAR THROTTLE

  • Now the geometry being is imported to paraview for processing of values. The geometry is sliced in Z-axis normal and lets to simulate.

RESULTS:

  • The simulations have been studied against different parameters, the results are given below:

Mass flow vs Cycles

Total pressure vs Cycles

Average velocity vs Cycle

The velocity stream lines flow over the throttle shows the pressure regions developed across the throttle. The region facing inlet undergoes low pressure region and the other end undergoes a high pressure region.
