Plate with a Hole
Stress concentration on plate with a hole
Case:1
For case 1 structural analysis carried out on plate with a hole of diameter 60 mm. The ,material is used is structural steel. The plate is modelled in Ansys spaceclaim software and is shown as below:
The dimension of plate are:
Lenght=300 mm
Width=120 mm
Thickness = 30 mm
The 2D geometry is created and model is imported in Ansys. The extruded model is shown in image below:
The properties of material used in given below:
The model is meshed using Ansys with an element size 4mm and a patch controlling mathod Tetrahedron is used.
One side is fixed and in other side a pull force of 5000 is applied as shown.
The result of deformation and maximum stress are:
Case 2: In this case structural analysis is carried on a plate with three holes in it.
Dimensions of plate is:
Lenght=300mm
Width= 120 mm
Thickness= 30 mm
Central hole diameter = 60 mm
Two other holes = 30 mm each
The 2D geometry is created and model is imported in Ansys.
Conclusion:
Deformation:
Case 1: 2.75 microns(max)
case 2: 2.97 microns (max)
Stress:
case 1: 6.18 MPa
case 2: 5.98 MPa
As the stress in case 2 is less, so as Design point of view case 2 model is preffered.
From ,manufacturing point of view case 1 model will be preffered as less work to be done in case 1 model , hence cost of production of case 1 model will be lesser.
